About The Exhibition

February 7, 2025-April 27, 2025

North Carolina artist Elisabeth Chant (1865-1947) made an indelible mark on
Wilmington’s art community. Born in England, she emigrated to the United
States, eventually settling in Wilmington around 1922. Chant studied art in
Minneapolis and Paris and was influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements.

In Wilmington, she became known for her vibrant landscapes and
scenes of the North Carolina coast. Chant also created decorative designs and
explored mysticism and spiritual themes, which informed her artistic style. She
was instrumental in developing Wilmington’s cultural landscape, founding art
classes, mentoring young artists, and establishing a community art association.

This exhibition explores the people and landscapes of Chant’s world.
