About the Connections Program
The Connections Program invites people in the earlier stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers to experience the museum in a supported environment designed to minimize stress and to provide a connection between each visitor and the art on view in the museum. CAM has invited area Certified Therapeutic Musicians (CMPs) to help make our Monday Connections Program an even greater delight for the senses with music in the galleries and the Galleria.
Engaging with art connects to quality of life. Studies show that participating in art activities has documented neurological benefits that improve cognitive functions in the elderly, including those with dementia. This has been demonstrated in museums across the world – ranging from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to the Louvre in France. The Society for Arts in Dementia Care recognizes the benefits of art for the elderly, including an increasing sense of self-worth, stimulating curiosity and self-evaluation, and affirming dignity. Viewing art calms and soothes agitation and improves quality of life. It is an activity that allows caregivers and participants to be present in the moment together, in enjoyment. It is research like this that underscores CAM’s commitment to Connections as an important resource to seniors in the Cape Fear Region.
Certified Therapeutic Musicians (CMPs) are trained to create a healing environment to address many types of health conditions including anxiety, pain, and dementia, just to name a few. Live, prescriptive music can positively influence mood and can help the listener reconnect to good memories from the past. Guests will be welcomed with musical selections from a harpist or flutist to set the mood for the day, then we will continue to infuse music throughout the tour and the activities designed by museum staff to complement the exhibitions. The beauty of live music is that it can be changed in an instant to fit the mood.
After your guided walk through the exhibitions, accompanied by CAM Connections Volunteers, participants are invited to create artwork in response to the exhibitions. Our Education staff will lead projects that allow all visitors to respond to the art or music they have experienced. Guests are also invited to bring lunch to the museum and enjoy seating in our cafe or courtyard after the tour. Groups or individuals with their loved ones are welcome.
There is no charge for the Connections Program, but we ask that you pre-register. The Connections Program occurs once a month on a Monday and fills up quickly. To learn more or make your reservation, please call Ashley Rowland at 910-395-5999 ext. 1006, or email [email protected].
