As part of the Fresh Air: Inflatable Sculptures exhibition, Cameron Art Museum invites viewers to immerse themselves in Silver Clouds, a magical installation by the world’s preeminent Pop artist, Andy Warhol. The Studio One gallery is transformed into an interactive art experience, as roughly 80 floating silver balloons fill the space, enticing viewers to interact with the objects and the space in an entirely new way.
In 1964, Andy Warhol began his investigation of what he termed “flowing sculpture.” He worked closely with Billy Klüver, an engineer at Bell Laboratories, who encouraged the artist to try Scotchpak, a silver laminate material primarily used to wrap sandwiches. Warhol and his assistants fashioned this industrial material into rectangular “pillows” inflated with a proprietary mixture of air and pure helium, creating “clouds” capable of hovering between floor and ceiling.
The Silver Clouds were created in Warhol’s famous studio, The Factory, the interior of which had been painted entirely silver. Here, the artist and his Superstars challenged the notion of what a work of art could be and how art could be experienced. In 1966, the clouds were debuted at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, and Andy released one of the clouds from a gallery window, forever blurring the line between the art world and our daily lives. Now, as then, visitors are invited to touch and move amongst the clouds. Experience the joy of the unexpected, as mundane materials are transformed by the power of art.
At Cameron Art Museum, Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds transforms their Studio One gallery into an immersive, dreamlike environment. First exhibited in 1966, the installation features large, pillow-shaped silver balloons that drift gently through the air, blurring the boundaries between art and audience.
Playful yet profound, Silver Clouds captures Warhol’s fascination with repetition, celebrity, and mass production—while inviting visitors to step inside one of Pop Art’s most iconic and interactive works.
