Spend the evening with Erica Xavier-Beauvoir for an in-depth look at Rooted in Memory: The Gullah Geechee Vision of Jonathan Green. Reflect on the work of Jonathan Green and the paintings in the exhibition that mirror the Gullah Geechee environment, history, and traditions.

Stretching from Jacksonville, North Carolina, to Jacksonville, Florida, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor works to preserve and interpret the traditional cultural practices, historic sites, and natural resources connected to Gullah Geechee communities. Through this conversation, discover the significant contributions Gullah Geechee people have made to American culture and history, and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect their communities, lands, waters, and traditions.

As the Corridor’s Resiliency Manager, Erica focuses on climate resilience and preserving land and water. She will bring this environmental lens to the exhibition, exploring the connections between people and place—from the sweetgrass woven into working baskets to the ancestral lands and Lowcountry landscapes represented in Green’s paintings.

About the speaker:

ERICA XAVIER-BEAUVOIR is a diverse human-centered public servant, storyteller, and community engagement professional with over 15 years of experience in the public safety sector. They are the Resiliency Manager with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, extending their mission to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally lived in the coastal areas and sea islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.  Creating mindful spaces for data gathering coupled with best-practice research, Erica has led projects regarding food equity, criminal justice, and urban design thinking. She gained experience with land use and repurposing urban land to improve functionality in underserved communities. As a Death Doula and natural burial consultant, Erica has first-hand knowledge regarding improving narratives in diverse communities to elevate and educate those seeking burial options. They hold a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, a Master’s in Emergency Management, and a Doctorate in Metaphysics (nonsecular).
