The Nature of Writing (Southern Style)
In conjunction with our coming exhibition, With a Southern Accent, students will explore the rich heritage of Southern Writing with an eye keenly focused on how the Southern Landscape has shaped the lives, art, and writing of the South. Working from a few examples of Southern Literature, both old and new, and the works of art featured in the exhibition, we’ll look at how our interactions with nature are an extension of the Southern experience. We’ll draw inspiration from a multitude of sources—from a dog walks at a local park to a trip to the Mississippi Delta, and we’ll craft creative works that are both personal and universal in a 6-week workshop. Whether you’re a homegrown local or a recent transplant, this course is designed to help grow your understanding of what it means to be Southern.
