Intuitive Painting and Beyond

Explore your creativity and self-expression using a non-judgmental and free flowing approach.The focus is on the process not the final project. Connect with your inner self and embrace spontaneity!
Even if you have taken this class before it will be different. Layering warm and cool colors and highlighting will be involved but still all intuitive. Inexpensive paper will be used in the first class and then we will move into using Mixed media paper. Professional tempera paints will be supplied.

Unity with Variety – Keys to Good Composition

Designed for the experienced painter, this class explores how variety of color, value, shape , and edges can add interest - or create chaos - in your paintings. Finding the balance in painting of enough variety to be interesting and enough unity to hold together, is critical to good design. The role of these visual elements and principles in composition will be explored in slide presentations and lots of individual attention. Students will work from their photos in oil.

The focus of this class will be on hand building techniques, including pinch, coil, and slab building.  You will learn the basic methods for building with clay, embellishing the surface, and understanding the characteristics of different glazes.  Instruction is provided during the weekly class session, and studio time is available on selected days at the Museum School.  Your supply fee includes 25lbs of clay and glaze firing of your coursework.

Expressive Architecture in Pen and Ink

Learn how to capture your favorite architectural subjects in traditional pen and ink from rough sketches to finished drawings. Start with exercises to develop skills. Learn hatching techniques to create depth and texture. Experiment with different pen strokes, and incorporate ink washes to depict areas of shadow. We’ll create dynamic sketches then advance to more refined drawings. Once learned, these techniques can be applied to any subject. Course pairs well with Architectural Drawing on Location.

If you want to learn the basics of painting and color, this class is for you! Overview of brushes and different acrylic paints will be introduced, in addition color mixing and color theory.
Techniques for adding texture using gel medium and experimentation with various tools other than brushes will be explored. Beginning with a simple apple and moving on to a landscape using overlaying colors to create a different type of texture.

Architectural Drawing on Location

Focusing on Wilmington’s beautiful architecture, students will develop drawing skills by first understanding perspective then learning how to apply those skills drawing on location. The first class session will meet in the classroom for a lesson on perceiving angles, measuring scale and proportion and accurately representing them on the page. A brief overview of linear perspective will also be covered. Sessions 2-4 will meet on location. Architectural elements, terminology, and style will also be covered.

This class introduces you to the concepts of tone and value. These colors can be used to create depth, dimension, and contrast. Understanding the grayscale is essential for mastering light and shadow. The scale will be created by mixing various shades from white and black. Creating smooth transitions.. Even if you have taken this class before it will be different. Layering warm and cool colors and highlighting will be involved but still all intuitive. Inexpensive paper will be used in the first class and then we will move into using Mixed media paper. Professional tempera paints will be supplied.

Expressive Architecture in Pen and Ink

Learn how to capture your favorite architectural subjects in traditional pen and ink from rough sketches to finished drawings. Start with exercises to develop skills. Learn hatching techniques to create depth and texture. Experiment with different pen strokes, and incorporate ink washes to depict areas of shadow. We’ll create dynamic sketches then advance to more refined drawings. Once learned, these techniques can be applied to any subject. Course pairs well with Architectural Drawing on Location.
