The focus of this class will be on hand building techniques, including pinch, coil, and slab building.  You will learn the basic methods for building with clay, embellishing the surface, and understanding the characteristics of different glazes.  Instruction is provided during the weekly class session, and studio time is available on selected days at the Museum School.  Your supply fee includes 25lbs of clay and glaze firing of your coursework.

Inside the Silhouette

Examining works from artists in our permanent collection, including Clarence Heyward, Kara Walker, Willie Cole, Romare Bearden and more, "Inside the Silhouette" will study the history of American depictions of black bodies in art, and surrounding themes, through the lens of artists whose work challenges these images by creating a deep sense of self.

Architectural Drawing on Location

Focusing on Wilmington’s beautiful architecture, students will develop drawing skills by first understanding perspective then learning how to apply those skills drawing on location. The first class session will meet in the classroom for a lesson on perceiving angles, measuring scale and proportion and accurately representing them on the page. A brief overview of linear perspective will also be covered. Sessions 2-4 will meet on location. Architectural elements, terminology, and style will also be covered.

It's a jungle out there! This 4-week course is perfect for the student artist interested in exploring abstract techniques, but not sure where to start. We will focus on botanical subjects to inspire semi-abstract and non-objective mark-making with the painting medium of your choice. We will even add a few mixed media techniques to add dimension, texture, layers along with a path of distilling down to fundamental building blocks of line, shape, value and color. For seasoned beginners to advanced.

Mastering the features for portrait drawing and painting

For anyone wishing to further refine their skills at rendering the features of the head for portrait drawing and/or painting. We will briefly practice constructing and modeling a proportioned head. We'll then focus on each feature individually (the eye, the nose, the mouth and ears) from various angles. Learn techniques for placing the features correctly within the head every time. This class is designed to build confidence and assurance in your portrait drawing and painting.

Use bright colors to empower yourself! Experimentation with bold color and multiple tools to paint with will unlock your creative possibilities. Use pattern,
and vivid hues to ignite emotions from passion to joy! Van Gogh, O’Keefe, and Matisse are just a few of the artists that used bright colors!
Choose an artist’s painting that you would love to paint or create your own. I will also have photos.

at least a dozen small/medium sized gesso canvases or panels, (Winsor & Newton professional oil paints) Permanent Rose, Cadmium Lemon, Pthalo Blue, Ivory Black, and Titanium White (200 ml). small/medium palette knife, Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits (500 ml or larger), Silicoil brush-cleaning jar, 12"x16" white disposable paper palette, an assortment of acrylic/oil brushes (I use Creative Mark Pro White brushes from Jerry's Artarama : #1 round, # 6 bright, #10 bright), paper towels and painting clothes.

Mastering the features for portrait drawing and painting

For anyone wishing to further refine their skills at rendering the features of the head for portrait drawing and/or painting. We will briefly practice constructing and modeling a proportioned head. We'll then focus on each feature individually (the eye, the nose, the mouth and ears) from various angles. Learn techniques for placing the features correctly within the head every time. This class is designed to build confidence and assurance in your portrait drawing and painting.

For drawing: charcoal and 12" x 18" drawing paper; kneaded erasers and blending tools.
For painting: the Zorn palette at a minimum (Titanium White, Cadmium Red Pale, Ivory Black and Yellow Ochre). Helpful other colors would be: Cerulean Blue and a purple.
