The term "alla prima" is Italian for "at once" or "at first attempt". This technique is often used in a single sitting. Some of the more famous painters from that period who worked in an alla prima style are as diverse as Paul Cezanne, John Singer Sargent, Sarrolla and Monet.
Complete a portrait in one sitting. Learn how to capture the likeness of a person with fewer brush strokes. Students will learn color mixing, composition, and how to capture facial features.
Paint is provided. Please bring an 8x10 canvas or panel (ampersand gesso panel)
and a few of your favorite paint brushes, palette knife and glass or paper palette.
Photo References will be provided.
Mark making supplies: New black Sharpie permanent markers: fine point and ultra fine point, black ballpoint pen, china marker
Soft rubber brayer apx. 4”
1 ½” flexible flat putty knife
2 Soft cellulose sponges
2 bowls or buckets to hold water (about 20oz each)
Disposable gloves (i.e. surgical gloves or cooking gloves);
Old magazine, absorbent paper towels, soft rags for clean up
Printing plate, ink, printing paper and other supplies will provided by instructor
