Art Enhances Health

With the support of The Ministering Circle and the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, CAM offers FREE six-week classes to cancer patients and survivors. Based on research showing that art can positively impact brain function and well-being, these sessions aim to provide relaxation, emotional expression, and relief from pain and anxiety. Teaching artist Donna Moore and expressive arts therapist Lorraine Perry lead classes in art making and expressive writing. These classes include gallery visits and mindful meditation.

In partnership with Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute, CAM offers a one-year membership to anyone being treated for cancer. More information and membership cards are available at both the Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute and at CAM’s Visitor Services desk.

Illustrated Botanical Journals

Spend a relaxing evening studying and sketching botanicals to create a beautiful illustrated journal. Broaden your understanding of flowers and plants through guided lessons. Explore layouts, record observations and learn terminology. Experiment with graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil and watercolor. Botanical journaling can be a very meditative process that enhances creativity. Discover the creative and restorative possibilities of working with clay during this six-week studio course led by veterans. Participants of all skill levels will explore the fundamentals of hand-building and receive an introduction to the pottery wheel. Messy, unpredictable, and wonderfully forgiving, clay offers the freedom to experiment and create something uniquely your own. Recommendations for the beginner pastelist: Hard pastels - NuPastel brand is easily accessible online and in some stores (Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh). Medium pastels- Rembrandt, Holbein, and Richeson. Soft pastels- Blue Earth, Terry Ludwig, Unison, and Sennelier.

Papers:
Smooth Surface: Pastelmat (comes in pads or single sheets and many colors). Canson: some come smooth but some come with a pressed pattern (your choice)
Sanded Surface: UART, comes in 2 colors only, tan or black BUT comes in many grits, the higher the number #(800) the less gritty--- (#320 the most gritty). LUX archival only comes in white. Pastel Premier

Bring charcoal pencils, and paper for exercises as well as your finished painting. Bring white tape. Optional: value chart or color wheel.

Botanical Relief Ceramics

In this 5-week ceramics class, students explore the beauty of the natural world through textured clay surfaces and botanical impressions. Using leaves, flowers, grasses, seed pods, lace, and found organic materials, students learn how to create richly layered relief patterns and sculptural surfaces on functional and decorative ceramic forms.

Students may create a series of nature-inspired ceramic works such as: platters and serving trays, botanical wall tiles, vases and planters, bowls, and sculptural vessels.

Join us for a 4-week Jazz Appreciation Workshop with local saxophonist Benny Hill. Expressive Architecture in Pen & Ink

Learn how to capture your favorite architectural subjects in traditional pen and ink from rough sketches to finished drawings. Start with exercises to develop skills. Linocut Printmaking: Into and Beyond

Explore the relief printmaking method of Linocut to create striking images. This class is perfect for both the beginner and students with some experience. Learn the basics of planning and carving your design into a linoleum block. Then learn proper inking and printing techniques. Explore printing in black ink to create bold images and play with creative ways to print in color including reduction linocut. Tap into your creativity and see what you can create! Recommendations for the beginner pastelist: Hard pastels - NuPastel brand is easily accessible online and in some stores (Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh). Medium pastels- Rembrandt, Holbein, and Richeson. Soft pastels- Blue Earth, Terry Ludwig, Unison, and Sennelier.

Papers:
Smooth Surface: Pastelmat (comes in pads or single sheets and many colors). Canson: some come smooth but some come with a pressed pattern (your choice)

Expressive Architecture in Pen & Ink

Art Enhances Health

Based on research showing that art can positively impact brain function and well-being, these sessions aim to provide relaxation, emotional expression, and relief from pain and anxiety.
