Closing the Gap

Hosted once a year at CAM, Closing the Gap provides teachers with valuable Continuing Education Units (CEUs), which they can use to maintain certification. Participants also receive brand-new lesson plans that demonstrate how to integrate art and active learning into science, technology, engineering, math, language arts, history, as connected to CAM’s exhibition and permanent collection. When available, CAM brings in local teaching artists to enrich the professional development experience.

Closing the Gap is a free professional development workshop that introduces teachers to art integration and active learning for teachers in New Hanover, Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus, Pender, Onslow, Sampson, and Duplin counties. These workshops address the growing achievement gaps through arts integration.

Every year this professional development is led by CAM Education staff and linked to the exhibitions on view. During our February Closing the Gap, Thomas Sayre: Four Walls and Close to Home will be the focus of the arts-integrated workshop. The essential questions of: What does it mean to call a place ‘home’? and contemplating the complex relationship of ourselves in relation to our society and culture will be explored.
