Join us for an intimate conversation with North Carolina artist Elizabeth Bradford whose exhibition Elizabeth Bradford: A House of One Room opens at CAM March 12. Participants will have the unique opportunity to ask Elizabeth questions about her work and her process. Elizabeth Bradford’s masterful paintings originate from an intimate observation and profound reverence for the natural environment. This collection of paintings offers an invitation to share Bradford’s journey as she explores the gifts of the natural world. The reverence that she has for the environment, and all of its inhabitants, can inspire a deeper awareness of our interconnectedness and responsibility for its preservation and survival.

Cameron Art Museum and The Advocacy Project have come together to present the Pandemic Story Quilt Community Project. Create your own story quilt squares that will be sewn together into large quilts by Bobbi Fitzsimmons and local quilters. These will be displayed in an exhibition of Pandemic Story Quilts on display at the Cameron Art Museum this Spring.
How has the pandemic changed your life? The COVID pandemic has affected everyone. The ways in which it has impacted us may depend on where we live, our age, our families, and our health. People around the world have told their stories in pictures and those pictures are being put into quilts. Each quilt has a different perspective.
We would like you to tell your story with fabric and markers. We want to see how the pandemic has affected different people and in what ways. These story squares will be added into quilts to show different perspectives in the Wilmington community. The resulting quilts will be on display at the CAM beginning in April 2021
Writing, like visual art, is a wonderful outlet for self-expression and self-care. If you’d like, pick any of the prompts below that speak to you and write about your experiences during the past year.
Please contact education@cameronartmuseum.org with any questions.

On February 20-21, 1865, five USCT regiments from NC and Ohio braved open fire and certain death at the Battle of Forks Road. While these men fought to preserve the United States, they were also fighting a battle for their personal freedom and the freedom of their families. It is this remarkable story that Stephen Hayes will tell with his new sculpture on CAM’s grounds. The first section of the sculpture was delivered to Carolina Bronze Sculpture in Seagrove, NC, the day before the shutdown. Stephen Hayes is now back in his studio at Duke University where he teaches and is finishing up the last section. The sculpture will be installed at CAM in November 2021. There will be a fundraiser held for the completion of the project in Summer 2021, date TBA.

Unveiling November 13, 2021
Join us for the unveiling of Boundless, a new work of art by North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes Saturday, November 13, 2021.
Cameron Art Museum was the site of the Battle of Forks Road, a Civil War skirmish whose victory was won by the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and led to the fall of Wilmington. Many of the 1600 African-American soldiers who fought here were native to this area, and after the war, many of them stayed to settle, raise their families, establish educational opportunities, and build a thriving merchant class. Their impact is significant, yet their story is virtually unknown.
The life-size bronze (9 ft x 11 ft x 3 ft) sculpture by artist Stephen Hayes will be unveiled November 13, 2021 with programming commemorating the story of the USCT. The sculpture itself is fashioned from the cast features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story -- USCT descendants, reenactors, veterans, and community leaders. The sculpture is connected deeply to the community’s history, its present, and its future. The USCT Project is timely and necessary, as our nation looks closely at issues of race and systemic racism.
