Art Enhances Health

In partnership with Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute, CAM offers FREE six-week classes to cancer patients and survivors. Based on research showing that art can positively impact brain function and well-being, these sessions aim to provide relaxation, emotional expression, and relief from pain and anxiety. Teaching artist Donna Moore and expressive arts therapist Lorraine Perry lead classes in art making and expressive writing. These classes include gallery visits and mindful meditation.

You will learn the difference between kinds of paint brushes and canvases, and how important quality is when purchasing paints. Hidden Histories: Writing and the Art of the Past

Whether it’s a famous photograph from the end of the second world war, a local monument, or your grandmother’s cameo brooch, discover the power of exploration and research to infuse your creative writing. We’ll look at a few examples of “documentary poetry” (including a piece on Stephen Hayes’ “Boundless” sculpture at CAM) and use them as keys to unlock the doors to the past through your own work in a 6-week workshop.

In this four-week class you will design and shape the main components of your teapot—body, spout, handle, and lid. You’ll learn hand-building techniques to form each part, ensuring your teapot is both functional and beautifully balanced. Personalize your teapot by incorporating textures, patterns, or small details that make it truly unique. This class combines function and artistry, leaving you with a one-of-a-kind teapot that’s both practical and a beautiful piece of ceramic art!

Expressive Architecture in Pen & Ink

Learn how to capture your favorite architectural subjects in traditional pen and ink from rough sketches to finished drawings. Start with exercises to develop skills. Learn hatching techniques to create depth and texture. Experiment with different pen strokes, and incorporate ink washes to depict areas of shadow. We’ll create dynamic sketches then advance to more refined drawings. Once learned, these techniques can be applied to any subject.
