Minnie Evans Birthday Celebration
Saturday, December 13, 10 AM-1 PM | Reception Hall
Free. $5 donations suggested.
Sensory Hour: 9-10 AM (details below)
Bring the whole family to CAM for a Saturday of creative fun as we celebrate the life and legacy of visionary Wilmington artist Minnie Evans through art! We’ll be joined by guest artist Jameka Purdie. This drop-in program is designed for all ages—kids, teens, and adults—to make art together.
Younger visitors can create birthday cards for Minnie to display in Minnie’s Gatehouse on CAM’s grounds and make artwork inspired by her use of symmetry.
A family-friendly tour of the exhibitions will be held at 11:30 AM, inviting all ages to discover connections between Minnie’s work and CAM’s galleries. See original works by Minnie herself in the exhibition Cameron Art Museum: The Collection.
Adults and teens are invited to create their own dream journal, channeling Minnie’s vivid dreams and inner call to create. Work with Jameka to collage and decorate your journal cover using symmetrical designs and bold imagery in Minnie’s spirit.

About Minnie Evans
Minnie Jones Evans (American, 1892–1987) is recognized as one of the most important visionary folk artists of the twentieth century. After moving to Wilmington at a young age, she spent most of her life here and began making art in 1935 after hearing a powerful voice telling her to “draw or die.” Her work features repeating faces, eyes, angels, fantastical creatures, and flowers that reflect her deep spiritual vision and fascination with the natural world. “My dreams are in brilliant colors, and I paint the way I remember the dreams.”
About Guest Artist Jameka Purdie
Wilmington native Jameka Wrisbon Purdie began creating custom, one-of-a-kind jewelry under the name Alter Ego Designs in 2009. Her pieces range from classic to eclectic and are assembled with quality components sourced from around the world. Working with techniques such as stringing, wire wrapping, weaving, and metal-making, Jameka is an eternal student, always exploring new methods and materials in her creative practice.
