SUMMARY:CAM After Dark: Gallery Talk with Niki Hildebrand
DESCRIPTION:CAM After Dark: Gallery Talk with Niki Hildebrand\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, May 14 \n6:30-7:30 PM \nFree with museum admission \nEnter the World of Magic\, Light\, and Sacred Geometry: Glassworks by Frederick G. Kahl through a focused gallery talk with artist Niki Hildebrand. \nHildebrand brings her perspective as a painter\, sculptor\, and stained glass artist to explore Kahl’s use of illusion\, material\, and sacred geometry\, revealing how light\, form\, and perception shape the work. \n\nSet within the exhibition\, this after-hours experience offers a deeper way to engage with the ideas behind the art.  \n\nMagic\, Light and Sacred Geometry: Glassworks by Frederick G. Kahl is the culmination of the artist’s decade-long inquiry into the immersive and meditative quality of light. Featuring glass works and drawings\, the exhibition reflects a career shaped by magic\, play\, and a sense of mystery. Also known as “the Great Fredini\,” Kahl’s practice has spanned visual and stage illusions\, yogic sideshow feats of sword swallowing\, and 3D scanned and printed portrait sculptures. \n\nREGISTER\n\nAbout the Speaker \nNiki Hildebrand is a painter\, stained glass artist\, and sculptor who holds an MFA from RISD (2001) and a BFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design (1999). \nHildebrand\, born in London\, England\, now splits her time between her family base in Bellingham\, Washington\, and her chosen homes in Wrightsville Beach\, North Carolina\, and England. Hildebrand graduated from Chelsea College of Art in England and the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been shown in group and solo exhibitions internationally\, including four group shows in museums this year across the United States. \nHildebrand has received grants and awards\, including one from the WH Mellon Foundation. Engaged with the human condition\, her work captures sensory aspects of existence\, creating a play between solid visuals and indefinable matter. She is currently associated with the Coastal Designer Glass Studios. Born in London\, England\, Hildebrand lived and worked in Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, before coming to Wilmington\, USA. She has exhibited and sold works in England\, Ireland\, Sweden\, New Zealand\, and the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about the exhibition

SUMMARY:NC Black Film Festival Closing
DESCRIPTION:NC Black Film Festival Closing\nSunday\, May 3 \n2:30 PM Recognition of Award Winners and Honorees \n3:00 PM Film Screening \nAdmission $20 \nRegistration\nCAM is proud to host the closing of the 24th Annual NC Black Film Festival\, presented by the Black Arts Alliance. A three-day juried and invitational festival\, the NC Black Film Festival celebrates independent motion pictures by Black filmmakers and films exploring African-American life and history\, featuring shorts\, animation\, documentary\, and student films. \nThe closing film is Free Joan Little\, directed by award-winning Peabody documentarian Yoruba Richen\, followed by a Q&A with the director. The film tells the story of the landmark 1975 trial of Joan Little\, the first woman in U.S. history acquitted for using deadly force to resist sexual assault. At 20 years old\, Little was incarcerated in North Carolina when her case drew national attention\, becoming a rallying point for civil rights\, women’s rights\, and prison reform. Activists including Angela Davis and Rosa Parks joined her cause\, catalyzing a national conversation about racial justice and gender-based violence that remains deeply relevant today. \nYoruba Richen is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and recipient of the Black Public Media Trailblazer Award. Her most recent film\, American Coup: Wilmington 1898\, was nominated for a Peabody Award.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness Meditation in the Galleries\nFriday\, April 17\, 9 – 9:50 AM | $5 suggested donation\n\nJoin us in a contemplative gallery space for mindfulness meditation\, taught by Lorraine Perry. \nSimply put\, mindfulness is the practice of bringing attention to the present moment and meeting whatever arises without bias or criticism. With regular practice\, it cultivates spacious awareness around our thoughts and emotions\, encouraging clarity and the ability to respond rather than react. Scientific research shows it can also enhance balance\, focus\, strength\, and resilience. \nMindfulness meditation is a secular practice\, accessible to all\, and deeply beneficial both on and off the cushion. \nNote: The galleries can be cool—bring a garment for comfort. \n\nLearn more about Wellness at CAM here.\n\nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Wayne McDowell Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:Wayne McDowell Art Sale\nPROCEEDS SUPPORT CAM \nAll Weekend!\nFriday\, April 10 to Sunday\, April 12\, from 10 AM – 5 PM \nOpen to the Public \nCompass & Giving Societies Pre-Sale: April 9\, 2026\, 6-8 PM\nLearn more about Compass. Learn more about Giving Societies. \nCameron Art Museum is pleased to offer a special selection of works by beloved Wilmington-based artist Wayne McDowell (American\, 1960–2013)\, available for purchase as part of a museum fundraiser. Through a generous bequest from McDowell’s partner\, Nanci Joplin (1960–2025)\, a significant group of his works was added to the permanent collection of Cameron Art Museum\, while select additional works were approved for sale to benefit the museum. \nThe works available for purchase include pieces featuring McDowell’s signature haunting seascapes\, atmospheric coastal landscapes\, sparse interiors\, and abstract compositions. \nAfter moving to Wilmington\, North Carolina\, in the late 1990s\, McDowell became deeply connected to the region’s coastal environment and creative community. He worked locally as a graphic designer while maintaining an active studio practice. The coastal light\, shoreline\, and quiet intensity of southeastern North Carolina strongly influenced his work\, and many of his most recognized paintings were created during his years in Wilmington. \nDescribed as a “painter’s painter\,” McDowell was widely respected by fellow artists and critics. His work was collected by museums during his lifetime\, including Cameron Art Museum\, where his paintings remain part of the permanent collection. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions at the Chase Gallery\, Boston; Fayetteville Museum of Art; Hodges Taylor Gallery\, Charlotte; Greenhill Center of the Arts\, Greensboro; and Duke University\, Durham. \nThis sale offers a rare opportunity to acquire work by a Wilmington artist whose legacy remains closely tied to the local arts community\, while supporting Cameron Art Museum. \nImages:\nWayne McDowell\n(American\, 1960 – 2013)\nUntitled (detail)\nWatercolor
