Sunset Performance Series- Raphael Namé

Thursday, 9/21/2023
7:00PM-7:55AM
Boundless has always represented more than just the USCT who marched on our grounds but rather the resiliency of a people worldwide. We honor the many voices of the African diaspora wherever they found themselves in the Western world.

Bossa Nova or a "New Sound" builds itself off the samba rhythms of Afro-Brazilians and jazz-influenced chord voicings. A beautifully distinct sound that calms wherever it's heard.
Join us for an evening of calm Brazilian sounds from Raphael Namé and his ensemble.

Raphael Namé is a musician and journalist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Raphael has worked with photography, video, and producing bands and documentaries about bands. During journalism school, he also attended Instituto Antônio Adolfo of Music for a brief period and also had classes with Dino 7 Cordas, a Brazilian guitar legend. In 2002, he met his wife, Sarah, from Wilmington, NC, in Rio. They lived there until 2010 when they decided to move to this port city in the southeastern NC. He has taught classes at UNCW about Samba, Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general. He has performed in many venues here in the southeastern NC, including, Kenan auditorium, Wilson Center and Thalian Hall. Raphael’s guitar style resembles many of Bossa-nova’s guitar players. He calls it simply “Brazilian guitar”.

In 1963 João Gilberto released an album called Chega de Saudade. In this album João was playing a very innovative beat, where he would try to replicate with his guitar the sounds of some samba schools percussion. A famous journalist after listening to it called the beat a “bossa nova”, an old expression that literally meant “a new thing” or “a new trend”. Raphael’s goal with his guitar is the eternal pursuit of that beat.
