Boundless has always represented more than just the USCT who marched on our grounds but rather the resiliency of a people worldwide. We honor the many voices of the African diaspora wherever they found themselves in the Western world.
Bossa Nova or a "New Sound" builds itself off the samba rhythms of Afro-Brazilians and jazz-influenced chord voicings. A beautifully distinct sound that calms wherever it's heard.
Join us for an evening of calm Brazilian sounds from Raphael Namé and his ensemble.
Raphael Namé is a musician and journalist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Raphael has worked with photography, video, and producing bands and documentaries about bands. During journalism school, he also attended Instituto Antônio Adolfo of Music for a brief period and also had classes with Dino 7 Cordas, a Brazilian guitar legend. In 2002, he met his wife, Sarah, from Wilmington, NC, in Rio. They lived there until 2010 when they decided to move to this port city in the southeastern NC. He has taught classes at UNCW about Samba, Bossa Nova and Brazilian music in general. He has performed in many venues here in the southeastern NC, including, Kenan auditorium, Wilson Center and Thalian Hall. Raphael’s guitar style resembles many of Bossa-nova’s guitar players. He calls it simply “Brazilian guitar”.
In 1963 João Gilberto released an album called Chega de Saudade. In this album João was playing a very innovative beat, where he would try to replicate with his guitar the sounds of some samba schools percussion. A famous journalist after listening to it called the beat a “bossa nova”, an old expression that literally meant “a new thing” or “a new trend”. Raphael’s goal with his guitar is the eternal pursuit of that beat.

This event takes its inspiration from “Untitled” (L.A.) by ground-breaking conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres now on view in Love. Join us as we celebrate the joy, connections, and promise of love across time and generations.
Various community partners offer a safe space and share information, resources, and host fun family activities in CAM’s Reception Hall. At 2 PM we welcome Techmoja for a moving performance of Loud As We Want followed by a thoughtful movement workshop.
“Untitled” (L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres demonstrates slow depletion of green candies that make up this work serves as a metaphor for absence, transience, and the inevitability of loss, while the potential replenishment of the candy extends the metaphor as an act of remembrance or the potentials of the eternal.

Techmoja: Loud As We Want
Saturday, 10/7/2023
2:00PM-3:30PM
At 2 p.m., Techmoja will present a dance performance of an original work entitled Pulse. The work was created by the company in 2016 as an act of solidarity and a statement of belief in the right for the LGBTQ community to have public space. The piece creates a club atmosphere with high-energy music and fast-paced dance reminding us to celebrate our lives and community. The violent attack required a response - this program is both a celebration of individuals and about community love.
Following the performance, Techmoja lead artist Kevin Lee-Y Green and company members will facilitate their Loud As We Want movement workshop. Loud as We Want centers the power of dance and movement to act as a catalyst for social change in ourselves and social movements. The workshop uses a story circle process as a point of departure to analyze systems of oppression, a language of resilience and democratic possibilities. The combined program speaks back to the history of homophobia and the power of community love.
