Working with still lifes, models, photos and nature, we will work with your pastels and charcoal to improve drawing skills as well as pastel techniques. We will focus on color, temperature, values, shapes, layout and more to bring a drawing to a finished painting.
Printmaking Studies: Linocut

Explore the relief printmaking method of Linocut to create striking images. Students will learn the basics of carving their design into the linoleum block, inking and printing. The class will explore printing in black ink to create bold images as well as the option to try multi color printing to create a unique effect. Tap into your creativity and see what you can create! Please come to first class with an image or idea you want to translate into a print. This class is suitable for students aged 14 to adult.

Learn two essential techniques to draw an awesome animal! Proportions are a must to make a correct drawing. Proportions are the size relationships between objects and the sub-parts of an object. Shading enhances the drawing and gives it a 3D effect. We will work with graphite pencils to create realistic creatures. Camels, elephants, and tigers are a few choices.

Do you love bright bold colors? Do you love soft muted colors? If so, this class is for you! Learn how to create a harmonious color palette and a contrasting color palette. Decide if you want a painting filled with harmony or a painting using bold contrasts. Your painting can be a garden scene or objects of your choice. I will bring in photos but you can choose from your own as well. Contrast will give your artwork drama and opposition. Harmonious colors are similar. They flow, they are close in hue! Are you the person that wants to blend and get along or are you the rebel that wants to be different? Let your personality explode on your canvas!

Come and enjoy and experiment with pottery at our studio with Renato. We will cover hand building, throwing, extruding, decals, and glazing. Get into the studio and have fun with other people that love art.
Renato Abbate was born in Italy and transplanted yearly till 1999. He currently lives in Wilmington and loves the port city. He is continuously looking for ways to push his work further using mixed media and clay. He is always striving to create the perfect mug, using innovation as his inspiration.
Additional Open Studio hours are available to students. Hours will be published with the Museum School staff schedule.

Dr. Fonvielle will lead discussions on the region's lay of the land, its earliest inhabitants, the arrival of Europeans and Africans, settlement, development, growth, wars, epidemics, riots, rebirth, renewal, and much more. Drawing Inspired by Nature: Fall Foliage

Use nature as inspiration to create beautiful drawings! Improve your drawing ability through close observation of nature, capturing the unique shapes and colors of Fall plants and blooms. Learn different techniques to enhance your drawings and add color. Class time will be spent outside, drawing and gathering, then returning to the studio to refine drawings. Focus will be given to composition and developing new ways to capture your subject. Experimentation is encouraged. Students are welcome to bring in clippings from their own garden or yard. Some previous drawing experience suggested but not required.

The New Hanover County Extension Service Arboretum is a hidden gem along Oleander Drive. Maintained by staff and volunteer Master Gardeners, this wonderful garden is always in season. No matter the time of year, there is always something to see ... and photograph. This is a two day workshop open to all skill levels using any digital device. We meet at the Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, on Thursday morning from 10 am till noon. On Friday afternoon, 1 pm to 3 pm, we meet at Cameron Art Museum to share our images in a group critique.

We live in a world of quickly changing ideas and digital images where collage (once radical and rebellious) is now considered to be a traditional art form. This course explores the development of collage through learning its history and by practicing its skills we can enrich our understanding of this amazing art form. In this class you can collage into your old paintings and drawings, use typography and text for pattern and design, or work with multiple papers for pattern and texture. Landscape Photography is a wide-ranging topic. It can be as simple as documenting the flowers in your backyard or as grand as the million acres of a western National Park. While we don't have any sweeping vistas to compare with the iconic west, we do have many beautiful natural areas in and around Wilmington. In this six-day session, we will explore the Ft. Fisher Hermit Boardwalk, the riverscape of Carolina Beach State Park and much more. On week six, we will meet at Cameron Art Museum to share our work in a group critique. We will explore the use of wide and telephoto lenses as well as using our nifty fifty to create the perfect panoramic. This session is open to all skill levels and any digital device, so grab your DSLR, smart phone or tablet and sign up.
