Kids have amazing imaginations and this camp is sure to get them excited about making art. Students will learn about recycling, reuse and upcycling in this creative mixed media art camp. Our young makers will be artists and inventors as we work our way through piles and bins of everyday materials that would otherwise be trash and giving it new life as they turn it into treasured works of art. Simple materials like cardboard boxes, paper tubes, bottle caps and scraps of fabrics might become sculptures of creatures, handmade inventions, toys, mosaics, musical instruments, jewelry and more.

Full tilt boogey experimentation! Draw with non-traditional materials on art-cycled papers and substrates to create a variety of mixed media fodder for collage, journaling, bookmaking, and more. We'll literally pull ideas out of a hat - combining observational drawing with responsive, automatic drawing to further develop and incorporate into mixed media compositions or recognize as finished drawings. Students are invited to bring in favorite supplies to use in addition to a variety provided by instructor.

An assortment of papers and adhesives will be available, but please feel free to bring any scrap papers, magazine pages or other materials for your looks!

Speak Ya Peace: Juneteenth Celebration

The Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington will host an afternoon of celebration with spoken word, music, and dance. Juneteenth recognizes African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. Hear from poets, writers and organizations in our community, sample local flavors from food trucks, and come dressed in African inspired attire. It's a time for communities to come together for reflection and rejoicing.

Art Explorers – Tar Beach

We will read the award-winning Faith Ringgold classic ‘Tar Beach’ in front of the original art work! We create our own marker drawings on fabric to tell our own stories.
Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us.

If you love the element of surprise that printmaking, cyanotype and wet cyanotype processes provide you will be enjoying the hours during guided and open ended studio time enriching your skills and preparing a portfolio filled with papers you have created of different sizes and types during this workshop. Expect to engage with centers after demos and time for touching examples. Learn how to work with different applications, surfaces, history, tools, incorporating image transfer, resources, content, composition and preservation. Lumen, photogram, argyrotype and chlorophyll printing will be touched on with opportunity to experiment.

‘Resilience’ Community Screening, Gallery Talk

View the award-winning documentary 'Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope'. The film screens in our spacious reception hall from 12 PM to 1 PM, followed by an optional brief discussion with other community members. Learn about the New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force. https://www.nhcbouncesback.org/. After the screening, join our Cultural Curator Daniel Jones for a gallery tour with a focus on resiliency themes.
The CAM offers free screenings of ‘Resilience’ on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday and then it moves to the second Friday). Feel free to grab lunch at the CAM café, or bring your own lunch!
No fee and no registration necessary.
