Learn to paint a seashell in a sky of your choice. It can be a calm sky, a cloudy sky, or a brilliantly colored sky. Your seashell can hover over the ocean, where it once lived, or be in another venue that is important to you. You should keep your sky simple so that the shell is the dominant focal point. The purpose of this painting exercise is to explore what comes from your inner self. Everything that we choose to create has a deeper meaning than we realize once we allow ourselves that freedom.

After returning to the studio, students will enhance and refine their drawings using pencil, pen and adding color. Experimentation is encouraged. Some previous drawing experience suggested.

Art Explorers is going on a field trip! For this very special Art Explorers, we will meet at Airlie Gardens.
It's turtley spring and the animals are on the move! NHC Parks and Gardens educators will teach us all about our shelled friends that call the garden home and take a nature walk to see who we find! Our featured story will be "Franklin in the Dark". Ms. Georgia will teach us how to create our very own crafty turtles using paint, paper plates, and colorful paper!
Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us.
Garden admission included with this program. Children under 2 are free. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. PLEASE NOTE: Registration for this event is handled through Airlie Gardens and takes place at Airlie Gardens.

Turner was born and raised in Detroit Michigan, the child of two Southern emigres. After graduating from the renowned Cass Technical High School (Detroit) in 1974 and the Columbus College of Art and Design (Columbus, Ohio) in 1978, she worked in retail advertising and designed catalogs and other collateral for department stores. Retail advertising took her to Atlanta, Georgia. There, Turner became intrigued by West African culture and stories and the connections she saw to her own story as a descendent of enslaved West Africans. In the 1990s, Turner moved to North Carolina, where she established herself as a gourd artist. Even after a midlife career change to teaching middle school art, Tejuola continued her craft. She moved to Fort Worth after retiring from teaching in 2020 to be closer to family.

‘Resilience’ Community Screening and Tour

The film screens in our spacious reception hall from 12 PM to 1 PM, followed by an optional brief discussion with other community members. After the screening, join our Cultural Curator Daniel Jones for a gallery tour with a focus on resiliency themes.
The CAM offers free screenings of ‘Resilience’ on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday and then it moves to the second Friday). Feel free to grab lunch at the CAM café, or bring your own lunch!

Absolutely no painting experience is necessary. This will be a continuation of Intuitive Painting I but new students are welcome to join in.
We will again be starting class with mediations or readings to calm our minds and let our subconscious take over. Calming music may be played at the beginning of class. Then the class will be silent. Paints and brushes will be in the center of the room and each student will choose the color and the brush they would like to begin with. No paints will leave the table in cups. The student will go back and forth and let their intuition choose the color and brush to be used each time. No preconceived ideas. No attachment, no judgment, play, and inner visions are an integral part of this creative process. $10/supply fee
