Britt Fishel and Artists

Britt Fishel and Artists is an internationally award winning, collaborative, contemporary dance company. Under the direction of Britt Whitmoyer Fishel, the company explores assimilations of the human experience, democratizing and normalizing socioeconomic, political, and identity driven conversations, anchored in intersectional feminism. Through performances and screendances, BF and Artists has a critical lens on sexism, gender bias, and ecofeminism as seen in past and present, while rooted in hope and progression for the future. Their performance is REDACT.

Over time, we have observed extensively in human history, a pervasive gender gap that effectively silences and erases women's accomplishments, experiences, needs, and daily lives. This can be seen through politics, in the workplace, in the home, and in every day occurrences. REDACT speaks specifically to gender data gap and gender politics, while asking why women are still so often unseen, undiscovered, and unimagined. Britt Fishel and Artists premiered REDACT at the Florence Biennale in October 2021 and was granted the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Award in Performance for the work.

Gallery Conversation: Stephen Hayes and Mike Willi

Sunday, 3/20/2022

Gallery Conversation: Stephen Hayes and Mike Williams of the Black on Black Project

Join artist Stephen Hayes and Mike Williams of the Black on Black Project for a conversation for the closing of Voices of Future’s Past. There is limited seating for this conversation in the Hughes Wing on the day Hughes’s exhibition closes, so reserve your tickets now.

Boundless artist Stephen Hayes went to North Carolina Central University, aiming to transfer to North Carolina State University in order to study mechanical engineering. Instead, through a friend, he discovered graphic design. His new major led to a ceramics course, where his enthusiasm and skill allowed him as much time as he wanted on the wheel. He threw enough pots to develop a strong portfolio, leading to a residency at the acclaimed New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Hayes earned a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. His thesis exhibition, “Cash Crop,” has been traveling and exhibiting for a decade. In his work, Hayes uses three symbols: a pawn, a corn, and a horse to explore America’s use (or misuse) of black bodies, black minds, and black labor. Artists, he believes, are as much translators as they are creators. He started teaching at the college level in 2011; currently, he is a professor of sculpture at Duke University.

North Carolina native Michael S. Williams fosters community engagement through his work as a consultant and through the Black On Black Project, an organization he founded that works with artists and community members on exhibitions and events that unpack the issues of our time.
A graduate of North Carolina Central University, Williams spent 15 years in media at The News & Observer in roles centered on content creation and community building. He has curated more than 25 art exhibitions and scores of programs related to equity in partnership with municipalities, local businesses and nonprofits. Williams has provided opportunities for critical conversations at events and forums throughout the state of North Carolina.

This discussion will shed light on the story of the USCT and the reading will be followed by a book signing and an opportunity to learn more about Stephen Hayes’s new sculpture Boundless. Abraham H. Galloway (1837-1870) was a fiery young slave rebel, radical abolitionist, and Union spy who rose out of bondage to become one of the most significant and stirring black leaders in the South during the Civil War. Throughout his brief, mercurial life, Galloway fought against slavery and injustice. He risked his life behind enemy lines, recruited black soldiers for the North, and fought racism in the Union army's ranks. He later became one of the first black men elected to the North Carolina legislature. Long hidden from history, Galloway's story reveals a war unfamiliar to most of us. Historian David Cecelski has written several award-winning books and hundreds of articles about history, culture, and politics on the NC coast. Cecelski was recently the co-recipient (with Tim Tyson) of the N.C. Literary and Historical Association’s Crittenten Award for lifetime achievement.
