In-Person Class: Painting in the Great Outdoors with Todd Carignan
This class is about painting on location and capturing what you can in one sitting. Each class will meet in a different location (revealed the day before through email), where the instructor will talk his way through a brief demo, then help you paint from life for the rest of the time. The instructor will work in oil paint, but any mediums you are familiar with are acceptable.

Art Explorers at Airlie Gardens

Join us on the first Thursday of each month for a special session of Art Explorers happening live from Airlie Gardens!
Inspired by the Cameron Art Museum's current exhibitions, ‘Safe Places: Robert Johnson’ and ‘Elizabeth Bradford: A House of One Room’, and the beautiful natural environment found in Airlie Gardens, we enjoy story time, a fun science lesson from the Airlie Gardens educators, and a simple art project based on the science lesson! Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join, learn and create art with us.

Gallery Talk with Chris Helms

Tour the Safe Places exhibition by NC artist Robert Johnson with the Superintendent of Carolina Beach State Park, Chris Helms. Chris has spent over 29 years immersed in the natural and cultural history of North Carolina. As a park ranger, he is dedicated to land conservation, park interpretation, and education of our critical watersheds and habitats.

Select an element from one of Robert Johnson's pieces in the museum to draw. Using graphite pencil and colored pencil to divide the drawing into sections to create a stained glass effect. This may be interpreted on a philosophical or emotional level including everything from the state of our world as you see it to something that brings you pure joy!

Participants will design a silk scarf. Using traditional tjantings and paint brushes, a hot wax resist will be applied to the fabric to protect white areas and subsequent colors. Silk paint/dyes will be applied according to the design.

In this workshop participants will offer a white board with "I Am" written on the top to people on the street and invite them to complete the thought by writing down their feelings. We will then make a portrait with the person and the board. By working with strangers to create a photograph in half a minute, this workshop will hone the photographer's interpersonal and portrait skills.

We'll look deeply into each artist's world and examine what they had to say about our relationship with nature and our relationship with the universe. And we'll explore how the ideas in their landscapes reflected their personal lives and philosophies.

‘Nature Inspires Art’ Community Installation A

Explore themes of nature and landscape from CAM’s current exhibitions, Robert Johnson: Safe Places and Elizabeth Bradford: A House of One Room’ from your home! Each bag contains lesson plans on both artists, as well as art supplies to create your own works in their styles. Each bag will also contain one pre-cut shape from nature, that you can decorate yourself and return to CAM for inclusion in a landscape collage that will be displayed in the Pancoe Art Education Center for the summer. This display will open on Saturday, June 19th.
