Join visual artist Donna Moore and writer Heather Wilson for a workshop inspired by the Spring Equinox and the work of North Carolina artist Robert Johnson, whose work is featured in CAM's exhibition Safe Places. Celebrate the light and warmth of spring with mandala making and mindfulness writing. A kit will be provided for pick up, or contact us if you would like to have it mailed to you.

In 1992, Louis de. K Belden (1926-2017) came to the realization if he wanted to continue collecting art, he would need a stronger focus to become a true collector. He shared his internal conversation with himself, “Look, if you are going to do this, you have to do it with a purpose, not just go around buying anything you see but to have boundaries, and my boundaries became prints - American and European, which dated from 1965 on.” His three criteria – medium, geographic region and period of time—framed the boundaries Belden placed on his practice of collecting, offering a boundless range of expression, experimentation and expansion of the terrain of postwar modernism.

This new exhibition of work from Belden’s collection reads like a who’s who of modernist and postmodernist prints and includes work by Judy Chicago, Richard Diebenkorn, Sonia Delaunay, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin, Robert Mangold, Kasimir Malevich, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella, among others.

Emily Burdette grew up in the small town of St. Albans, West Virginia. She began exploring music at a young age. Her mother and father always had music on in the house and encouraged listening to a wide range of artists such as The Beatles, Madonna, The Beach Boys, Elton John, & Linda Ronstadt. She began writing lyrics when she was fourteen years old. After having tried piano lessons and deciding that wasn’t for her, she picked up the guitar.

While attending Belmont University in 2002 in Nashville, Tennessee, Emily decided she truly wanted to pursue a career in singing and songwriting. Her style emulates her influences including Jewel, Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, and Sheryl Crow. She has a singer/songwriter style that invokes sounds of both pop and folk music.

Bluegrass and brunch -- what could be better? The Wilmington Bluegrass Instructor Band is a band formed from the instructors of the new Wilmington Bluegrass School. Aiming to get more people, young and old, playing bluegrass music, the Wilmington Bluegrass School offers individual lessons (currently virtual) and regularly occurring jams. At CAM on Saturday they will be performing some bluegrass classics with a full four piece band! The band features Marshall Brown, Jones Smith, Wes Chappell, and Perry Hewlett. These great musicians can be seen around town playing in their bands the Smokey Dunes, the Folkstone String Band, Massive Grass, and Masonboro Sound.

He says, "Music has become such a big part of my life as of late and I want to share it with everyone around me."

The goal of this series is to immerse ourselves into the worlds created by these artists, sensually, emotionally, and intellectually. We'll learn techniques for getting the most out of enjoying landscape paintings (including the use of music to enhance the mood of the landscape). We'll look deeply into each artist's world and examine what they had to say about our relationship with nature and our relationship with the universe. And we'll explore how the ideas in their landscapes reflected their personal lives and philosophies.

This class is about painting on location and capturing what you can in one sitting. Each class will meet in a different location (revealed the day before through email), where the instructor will talk his way through a brief demo, then help you paint from life for the rest of the time. The instructor will work in oil paint, but any mediums you are familiar with are acceptable.

Inspired by the Cameron Art Museum's current exhibitions, ‘Safe Places: Robert Johnson’ and ‘Elizabeth Bradford: A House of One Room’, and the beautiful natural environment found in Airlie Gardens, we enjoy story time, a fun science lesson from the Airlie Gardens educators, and a simple art project based on the science lesson! Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddler and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join, learn and create art with us.
