Member Preview: Robert Johnson: Safe Places

Robert Johnson’s new exhibition “Safe Places” will be open for members for this preview. It is as if artist Robert Johnson was experiencing the longing for safety amidst the current pandemic when titling his major body of work, Safe Places. In truth, Johnson started this ambitious project three years ago, with the objective to reside and work on site in all 41 North Carolina State Parks. This exhibition premieres more than 80 artworks realized through the artist’s vulnerable investigations. Johnson has chronicled the natural world on three continents in pencil, acrylic, and gouache on paper and canvas for over 40 years. His work echoes influences from late medieval Italian, American Folk, Indian Miniature, Tibetan Thangka, and Balinese painting traditions. Besides large-scale paintings, Safe Places includes his journal and notebook pages; intimate, annotated field observations of plants, birds, along with notes to himself.

Don't miss Live@CAM: Josh Youse at CAM Cafe. Josh Youse is an instrumental musician based out of Wilmington, NC. He grew up in rural Pennsylvania, the son of a radio DJ who instilled in Josh a deep love for music. A self-taught guitarist, his musical stylings evolved from listening to classic vinyl records and learning to improvise melodies. He initially started out playing bass guitar and often incorporates several other percussive instruments into his performances. Josh’s actual degree is in Adventure Education Leadership and Wilderness Therapy and his original songs are often inspired by his extensive outdoor adventures and travels. Call 910-777-2363 to make reservations for dinner in the courtyard while Josh plays.

The Cameron Art Museum and The Advocacy Project have come together to present the Pandemic Story Quilt Community Project. Create your own story quilt squares that will be sewn together into large quilts by local quilters. The resulting quilts will be on display at the Cameron Art Museum beginning in April 2021 and will tell the larger story of our community during the pandemic.

Join us for a conversation with Robert Johnson, whose major body of work is exhibited in Safe Places, which opens at CAM on February 7. Opening himself to the environment, he shares, “Recording the mood of a landscape is just as important as recording what I see.” This visual storyteller, has chronicled the natural world on three continents in pencil, acrylic, and gouache on paper and canvas for over 40 years. His work echoes influences from late medieval Italian, American Folk, Indian Miniature, Tibetan Thangka, and Balinese painting traditions. Besides large-scale paintings, Safe Places includes his journal and notebook pages: intimate, annotated field observations of plants, birds, along with notes to himself. Johnson reflects, “I hope people seeing Safe Places will understand what an ecologically diverse state we live in. I hope they will feel inspired to go hike the trails in our parks with an observant eye. The more people get out to see the beauty of these areas the more they are likely to care for state parks and will want to preserve what is left of the natural environment.”

Händel’s fourth sonata, there is truly a piece for everyone to enjoy. Danielle is currently a student at CFCC, studying under Professor Singleton. She also takes lessons with Dr.Gualdi from UNCW. She is currently pursuing an associate in fine arts music.

Jackie Evans is a singer, pianist, actor and vocal instructor from the Hudson Valley region of New York. She was most recently seen onboard Holland America Cruise Line's dueling pianos venue, "Billboard Onboard". Her style is a mix of soul/jazz/pop and is inspired by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Sara Bareilles, and Billy Joel. She is a recent local of Wilmington, and is very grateful for the warm welcome she has received from the musician community.

Call for Poetry

We invite submissions of poetry in response to the ideas and questions raised in Willie Cole’s “Black Art Matters” and “The Face of Lincoln.” Participants are allowed a maximum of two submissions and each submission should be under 100 words and written in English, Spanish. or both. Submissions are encouraged either through our online portal or written and dropped in the physical mailbox between the two exhibitions at CAM. Submitted works may be displayed on CAM’s website and/or shared during a virtual event. Deadline for submission is Sunday, February 21 with a virtual poetry reading Sunday, February 28.

At Home Clay Kit
It's 2021!! What does your 21st century family look like? I can remember the Jetsons and their space age city from my childhood when 2021 seemed lightyears away. What do you imagine your family could look like in 2050? Or parents, what did you imagine life would look like in 2021? Make your own set of family characters in clay to mark the beginning of a new year. A kit with clay and underglazes will be provided for work at home. Basic clay techniques will be discussed over the zoom session. Your characters are then painted with underglaze (as shown in the image above) and delivered to CAM for bisque firing. A final clear glaze will also be applied before a second firing is done.
