Butterflies, swords, crabs and so much more have been photographed in space. What will you discover? I will supply photos to work from. You may work directly from them or "take off" on your own. Ernest Turner at the St. Stephen AME church

Wednesday, 11/30/2022
7:00PM-8:00PM
Please welcome award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Ernest Turner to historic St. Stephen AME Church. Concertgoers can expect to hear a variety of music, including selections from The Great American Songbook, pop, original compositions, and various genres in the Black American musical tradition.

Ernest Turner’s professional career has spanned 20 years, and has included performances and recordings with some of the biggest names in jazz and pop music, including Delfeayo Marsalis, John Legend, Raphael Saadiq, and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. His latest album, My Americana (2019), offers an understated “ode to black American music” rooted in an innovative reimagination of pieces by Stevie Wonder, Fats Waller, and others, alongside original compositions.

Ernest recalls certain experiences that have shaped his musical philosopy: "My mother was a music teacher and minister of music at a Baptist church - there were records/cassettes in our house ranging from Louis Armstrong to Michael Jackson. As she had to play each Sunday at church (which meant I was there as well - kicking and screaming), I became familiar with the sounds of traditional Black gospel music."
"I attended undergraduate and graduate school in New Orleans. Music is life in New Orleans - it's nothing to see folks second-lining down the street, or a brass band playing a birthday party in your neighborhood. I learned so much about the feeling and spirit that should be present in the music."

We would like to thank South Arts for their support in making this concert possible for the community.
