For the past twenty years, Benny Hill has performed in a diverse set of musical groups and engagements, ranging from orchestra pits to cruise ships to featured artist and soloist at numerous venues across the country and abroad.
Benny is well versed in the many styles and genres of popular and classical music and specializes in jazz performance. He is steeped in the tradition of many of the past greats including Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley, Jackie McLean, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. His improvisations on the Alto Saxophone are reminiscent of these greats, yet he has a distinct style and voice of his own. Benny is a true crowd-pleaser and never fails to raise excitement and enthusiasm while on stage.
Benny has shared the stage with such notable jazz musicians as Trumpeter Ray Codrington, Guitarist Melvin Sparks, Trombonist and Arranger Slide Hampton, bassist Percy Heath, drummer Winard Harper, Saxophonist Ron Blake, Trumpeter Eddie Henderson, and New Orleans’ Dirty Dozen Brass Band. He has also opened for roots rocker Edwin McCain and RatDog, with legendary Guitarist/Vocalist Bob Weir and Bassist Rob Wasserman and performed with James Browns’ “Soul Generals”.
Benny has a Bachelors of Music from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Masters of Music from Northern Illinois University. Benny currently resides in Wilmington, NC and is an adjunct professor at Cape Fear Community College.

WSO Second Sunday Concert

$10.00 for adults; students and children under 18 free. Weyerhaeuser Reception Hall
“We talk of heaven, we think everything is going to be white. But I believe we’re going to have the beautiful rainbow colors.” – Minnie Evans
In honor of Minnie Evan’s 129th Birthday, the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra Chamber ensembles will perform works of music inspired by her works of art. Many of her works were inspired by the plants at the Arlie Gardens and her compositions were mostly abstractions blending nature with the face of God. Her work is known for highly charged color and meticulous symmetry and is often compared to Buddhist mandala paintings.
The WSO has commissioned local composer, and former WSYO student, Algernon (AJ) Robinson, to write a composition for quartet honoring her many works of art.
The Cameron Art Museum will also display the artwork that inspired the musical selections being played at this very special event.
