This photography workshop is geared to the photographer of all skill levels. Fall is a wonderful time of year for cemetery photography. Pumpkin spice coffee, ghosts, pumpkin spice doughnuts, goblins, pumpkin spice pizza, and tombstones, fall is a great time to walk through Oakdale Cemetery. This is another year round local destination. A wonderful place for reflection, history and photography. Any digital device may be used for this workshop, smart phones, tablets or DSLRs. If using a DSLR is it is suggested that the participant bring an array of lenses, from wide to telephoto. A macro is always fun if you have one. Alan will be available with assistance and technical advice. Day 1 Meetup is 10 am at main gate, 520 North 15th Street. Day 2, we will gather for a conversation about the work.

After drawing a person with graphite pencil you will use a variety of drawing pencils to shade the clothing on your person. Bring in a picture of your choice. Anime characters are acceptable as are ballerinas, fireman, or whatever you choose. You may also use colored pencils to shade.

What are ways we can enhance our paintings' color story? Color theory and capturing bold, emotional color can be challenging. This course is a fun study in color fundamentals with a twist. We will explore how we can enhance the characteristics of value, temperature and saturation, along with experimental color combos, to build confidence and more dynamic paintings. We will pull inspiration from art history and modern masters, to create an array of color studies in still life, landscape and abstraction. Great for seasoned beginners to advanced levels, and your preferred painting medium.

Closing the Gap with Arts Integration

Deepen your understanding of CAM’s USCT public sculpture Boundless through the lens of history, poetry, and movement. Learn what arts integration is and how you can employ it in your classroom. These workshops are designed to teach educators how to use the arts to teach core curriculum and help close the achievement gap through active learning strategies that engage all learners. These workshops are offered free to all educators in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson countries. Participating educators will receive a certificate of completion to submit to their respective counties for CEU credit consideration.

This two-day intensive is a fun introduction to working en plein air as well as refresher for building a painting reference library. Students will learn an array of drawing and watercolor techniques, with graphite, water soluble colored pencils, markers, watercolor, and gouache. This is the perfect primer for building a sketchbook/journal practice for travel and artist on the go. All levels welcome, from beginner to advanced.
Instructor will provide meeting locations prior to the class.

Printmaking Studies: Collagraph Collage

Learn the art of collagraph relief printmaking using plates created by collage. In this workshop students will create printing plates by gluing elements onto the printing surface to create an image. Students are asked to gather collage supplies ahead of time and bring them to the first class session. Collage items should be less than 1/8” thick and can include scraps of cardboard; textured item such as sandpaper, fabric, burlap or lace; string or twine, leaves, etc. Students will create their plates during the first session and print them during the second session. This class is suitable for teens aged 14 to adult.

When bookbinding and printmaking combine, the possibilities are endless! In six hours learn to tell your own story by expanding a single art block print, that you learn to create, and expand it into a sequence of image to create the pages of your own hand bound book. Learn about paper, colorants, cyanotype, ways to embellish, hand carved block prints and simple monotype printmaking techniques.
'Resilience' Community Screening and Gallery Tour

View the award winning documentary 'Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope'. The film screens in our spacious reception hall from 12 PM to 1 PM, followed by an optional brief discussion with other community members. Learn about the New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force. www.nhcbouncesback.org. After the screening, join our Cultural Curator Daniel Jones for a gallery tour with a focus on resiliency themes.
The CAM offers free screenings of ‘Resilience’ on the first Friday of each month (unless there is a holiday and then it moves to the second Friday). Feel free to grab lunch at the CAM café, or bring your own lunch!

We had so much fun in the last Yupo class, we're going to do it again! Paint with watercolor paint and WC materials on this paper. Yupo is an archival plastic paper. The water and paint don't absorb into the paper, leaving more time to manipulate the paint. We will use other materials for special effects and have fun exploring. Each day will begin with a demo.

Saturday, November 5, 10am-12pm, & Sunday November 6, 1-3pm
In this workshop participants will offer a white board with "I Am" written on the top to people on the street and invite them to complete the thought by writing down their feelings. We will then make a portrait with the person and the board. By working with strangers to create a photograph in half a minute, this workshop will hone the photographer's interpersonal and portrait skills. On Saturday, we will meet at the corner of Market and Front streets downtown. Sunday we will gather for a conversation about the work.
