Gallery Talk: Abby Spangel Perry

Saturday, 10/16/2021
1:00PM-2:00PM
Abby Spangel Perry is an artist and educator living in Wilmington, NC. The subjects of her mixed media painting and drawing explorations are informed by her biological surroundings. Her focus often centers on our societal ambivalence toward nature. By drawing on image styles found in science and popular culture she is able to connect them to the misuse of nature as a commodity and bring attention to the effects we are having on the smallest components of our ecosystems. Perry focuses on nature’s fragile beauty and the tension between concepts such as hope through nurturing and creation, and fear through neglect and destruction. She intertwines these elements to portray subjects with vital intensity and desperate vulnerability.

Known for his iconic paintings of cakes and pies, Wayne Thiebaud's legacy as painter of abstract Americana continues, well into his 100th year. He's still painting, teaching and inspiring. The Bay Area Figurative Artists of the 20th century forged a relationship of abstraction and figuration that would distinguish them from the New York School and it's Abstract Expressionist movement. With a focus on several key players, including Wayne Thiebaud, David Park, Nathan Oliveira and Richard Diebenkorn, let's explore their impact and work through historical context, stylistic factors, and that California light, all establishing credence to their influence and special place in the modern era.
