“I Have a Dream” Peace Flag Project

Sunday, 1/17/2021
1:00PM-3:00PM
In-Person: Saturday, January 16th from 11am to 2pm or Sunday, January 17th from 1pm to 3pm.

At-Home (Online): Now until Sunday, January 17 at 3 pm

Cameron Art Museum honors the life and work of civil rights activist Martin Luther King with the "I Have a Dream" Peace Flag Project. We invite the community to take inspiration from King’s iconic speech from 1963 and think deeply about our own hopes and dreams for ourselves, our city, our nation, and the world. These dreams will be written on squares of cloth, emblematic of the peace prayer flags created for centuries in Tibet. Your peace flag will be included in a community installation that will be displayed around the CAM pond. Together, these flags represent our collective desire for racial unity, community healing, and peace.
With everyone’s safety in mind, we have devised two ways you can join in the collaborative community fun.

Want to be a part of our community installation from your own home? No problem! You can purchase a Dream Flag Bag and drop off your completed Dream Flag and we will add it to the Dream Flag Community Installation.

Member Preview: Robert Johnson: Safe Places

Saturday, 2/6/2021
10:00AM-5:00PM
Staff or docent led tours at 11AM,1PM, and 2PM.
Robert Johnson’s new exhibition “Safe Places” will be open for members for this preview. It is as if artist Robert Johnson was experiencing the longing for safety amidst the current pandemic when titling his major body of work, Safe Places. In truth, Johnson started this ambitious project three years ago, with the objective to reside and work on site in all 41 North Carolina State Parks. This exhibition premieres more than 80 artworks realized through the artist’s vulnerable investigations. Johnson has chronicled the natural world on three continents in pencil, acrylic, and gouache on paper and canvas for over 40 years. His work echoes influences from late medieval Italian, American Folk, Indian Miniature, Tibetan Thangka, and Balinese painting traditions. Besides large-scale paintings, Safe Places includes his journal and notebook pages; intimate, annotated field observations of plants, birds, along with notes to himself.
