SUMMARY:Living History Day: 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Forks Road
DESCRIPTION:Bring the whole family to commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Forks Road through living history\, film screenings\, family activities\, and an illustrated lecture by Ms. Chaitra Powell the inaugural Sarah Graham Kenan Curatorship in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC Libraries. Plus\, enjoy 20% off memberships ALL DAY! \nCameron Art Museum was the site of the Battle of Forks Road\, a Civil War skirmish whose victory was won by the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and led to the fall of Wilmington. Their impact is significant\, yet their story is virtually unknown. USCT reenactors from Battery B\, some who were cast for the Boundless sculpture\, will demonstrate living history and invite guests to learn about camp life from the 1860s. \nBoundless\, the public sculpture by NC artist Stephen Hayes\, features the cast faces of reenactors\, veterans\, descendants\, and community members. Boundless honors the USCT and their fight for citizenship and stands proudly on our museum grounds and as the centerpiece of this commemoration. \nSpend the day learning more about the USCT and this significant battle. \nRead about Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation‘s substantial investment in Boundless and its impact on our community \n10 AM-5 PM\nLearn about the lives of USCT with reenactors from Battery B. Family activities in CAM’s Reception Hall.  \n12 PM\nBattle of Forks Road Documentary\nThe Battle of Forks Road documentary looks closely at the story of this Civil War skirmish that led to the fall of Wilmington\, focusing on the victory of the United States Colored Troops and the significant impact they made in the Cape Fear Region. \n1 PM\nLegacy Short Film \nLegacy is a short film chronicling the oral histories of the descendants of the United States Colored Troops by filmmaker Adam Alphin. The film paints a more complicated picture of this story than might be seen at first glance\, exploring the lives of the Black\, white\, and Indigenous men who fought at the Battle of Forks Road where Cameron Art Museum now stands. Legacy captures the resilience of these men\, the strength of the communities they built\, and the impact that they have had on our region\, our state\, and our country. This film continues the work of Boundless\, the sculpture by American artist Stephen Hayes that was installed on the museum’s grounds in 2021. \n2 PM \nIllustrated Lecture – Ms. Chaitra Powell \n\nThrough the Archives: In Search of African American History\, Culture\, and Traditions.  Drawn from her 15 years of working in archives\, Powell will walk the audience through a myriad of examples and queries that help us consider what makes African American culture unique\, how does it fit into broader narratives of American history and what shape do our memories of this knowledge take? Where do these memories belong\, who decides what matters and how do we share it with future generations? These are the questions that consume her as curator of the Southern Historical Collection\, and questions that she hopes every individual would consider for themselves\, their families\, and their communities. \n\nChaitra Powell has held the inaugural Sarah Graham Kenan Curatorship in the Southern Historical Collection since 2021. Prior to this appointment\, Powell served as the African American Collections and Outreach Archivist\, and as the Project Director for UNC Libraries’ Mellon funded Community-Driven Archives grant. In each of these roles\, Powell works to expand the possibilities of the archives by engaging diverse communities\, donors\, researchers and stewardship models. Before coming to UNC Libraries\, Powell worked for government\, corporate\, and community archives in Phoenix\, Chicago\, and Los Angeles. She is a certified archivist and holds an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Arizona.\n\n\nEvent Activities are Free; Gallery Admission applies. \n$5 Suggested Donation for Lectures \n\nREGISTER FOR LECTURE \nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations\, at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Tift Merritt and Thomas Sayre: Four Walls\, Four Songs (Reprise)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 15th\, 2025 for this special performance by grammy-nominated musician Tift Merritt and NC Artist Thomas Sayre.\n\nFour Walls\, Four Songs\, a sound response to Thomas Sayre’s Four Walls\, returns to Cameron Art Museum for a reprise. The performance explores the burned\, brushed\, rusted\, and razed layers of Sayre’s visual work. Merritt’s multi-movement piece uses voice\, piano\, and guitar while drawing us deeper into the elemental artworks on display in Sayre’s Four Walls. Drawing from a deep friendship and creative dialogue between the two artists\, Tift Merritt crafts a sound exploration that resonates with the materials\, visuals\, and questions posed by Sayre’s monumental piece. \nThe first showing of this performance in September 2024 sold out completely\, with one attendee describing it as “a remarkable multi-sensory exhibit that pushed the bounds of the typical gallery/museum experience.” You won’t want to miss this collaborative and evocative show by Tift Merritt and Thomas Sayre! \n\nCAM Members $75; Not-Yet Members $100\n \nTICKETS \n  \n\nTift Merritt is a Grammy-nominated musician who wanted to be a writer until her father taught her guitar chords and Percy Sledge songs. She has toured around the world with her sonic short stories and garnered a reputation for making her own way and setting an interesting artistic table. The New Yorker calls her “the bearer of a proud tradition of distaff country soul that reaches back to artists like Dusty Springfield and Bobbie Gentry.” Don Henley\, with help from Mick Jagger\, kicks off Cass County with a cover of her song Bramble Rose. Taking time off the road to raise her daughter\, Merritt began work on larger\, site specific projects by way of collecting found objects in the abandoned asylum in her hometown as forgotten\, essential language. Merritt has also collected artist interviews researching creative process and integrity on The Spark for Carolina Performing Arts and Marfa\, Texas Public Radio. She is a Practitioner-In-Residence in collaboration with the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University and lives in North Carolina with her daughter Jean. \n\n\n\nThomas Sayre is an American sculptor and painter. He designs and builds public art projects and private commissions all over the world. His current work includes large paintings made with tar\, smoke\, gunshots\, welding material\, earth\, and fire. Sayre is a founding principal of the multi-disciplinary design firm Clearscapes\, alongside architect Steve Schuster. The team designs numerous civic\, educational\, and museum buildings.\n\nThomas sculpts\, paints\, and produces commissioned work. His art is housed in collections across the globe from Thailand to Tennessee. He has exhibited his work in a number of private galleries and public museums\, including Cheryl Hazan Gallery in Manhattan and the Contemporary Art Museum and the North Carolina Museum of Art\, both in Raleigh\, North Carolina. In 1995\, Sayre received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. In 2014\, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from North Carolina State University.

SUMMARY:Contemporary Dance in Four Walls
DESCRIPTION:Experience the powerful connection between movement and art at Cameron Art Museum with Contemporary Dance in Four Walls. This unique afternoon of performances features dance works inspired by the spiritual and contemplative space within the Four Walls exhibition by Thomas Sayre. \n  \nThe event begins with Madeleine Pautier’s “Yūgen”\, a captivating exploration of the universe’s physical and spiritual mysteries\, from what lies below the water’s surface to what flies above. Drawing from the dual nature of water and air\, Pautier’s choreography reflects themes of fluid transformation\, hope\, and wonder.  \nYūgen (yoo-gehn) (n.) A profound awareness of the universe that evokes feelings that are inexplicably deep and too mysterious for words. \nMadeleine\, a professional dancer and choreographer\, has trained with renowned institutions such as the Kirov Academy of Ballet and BalletMet. Now a member of the US International Ballet and a master’s student in Exercise and Performance Psychology\, Madeleine brings her extensive experience and passion for movement to this performance. \n  \nFollowing this\, members of the Dance Cooperative present new works inspired by the scale and textures of Sayre’s art. These original pieces delve into themes of honor\, sacrifice\, struggle\, and spirituality\, resonating deeply with the exhibition’s contemplative nature. \nFounded in 2001\, the Dance Cooperative is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the dance community by providing affordable classes\, rehearsal space\, and performance opportunities to underserved artists in the greater Wilmington area. Their mission fosters a vital connection between professional dance and the local community. \n  \nSaturday\, February 8\, 1 PM\nLocation: Hughes Wing\nSuggested Donation: $5 \n  \nREGISTER \nLearn more about our programs and events here. \nPhotograph of Madeleine Pautier (right) taken by Vikki Slotiver.

SUMMARY:Tift Merritt in Concert
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $55\nNot-Yet Members: $70 \n  \n  \nCAM is excited to have artist Tift Merritt return for a public concert!  As a friend to Thomas Sayre\, Tift’s song cycle for Four Songs\, Four Walls revealed her passion for collaborative storytelling.  She returns for a solo performance in our Weyerhaeuser reception hall. \nTIFT MERRITT is a Grammy-nominated musician who wanted to be a writer until her father taught her guitar chords and Percy Sledge songs. \n  \n  \nREGISTER
