SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: We Still Here / Nos Tenemos
DESCRIPTION:Free with Museum Admission \n  \nThis hybrid event offers an opportunity to hear from Place of Encounters artist Mario Marzan and filmmaker Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi whose lives and work intersect in stories of deconstruction\, reconstruction\, and resilience. \nOn residency in Spain\, Marzan has prepared a video introduction to his artistic practice which integrates nature and art through the discipline of walking the landscape. Born in Puerto Rico\, Marzan’s work in our exhibition examines hurricanes and their paths as means by which to interpret cultures from the Caribbean\, Gulf Basin and US South.  “My work is a response to the changing landscapes of the area\, suggesting the storm’s power to alter not just the physical terrain\, but also individual psyches and the broader cultures of such affected regions. In referencing the hurricane’s continual transformation of landscapes and mentalities\, I hope to provoke certain questions with my work: How do we “map” memories? How is a visual crisis represented?” \nA screening of We Still Here/ Nos Tenemos and panel discussion will follow featuring the filmmaker Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi\, Anna Lee of Working Films\, and Audrey Hart of the NHC Resiliency Task Force. \nWe Still Here introduces the incredible youth of Comerío\, Puerto Rico navigating the aftermath of Hurricane Maria\, a disaster that brought an unprecedented level of devastation. In the lush mountains in the center of Puerto Rico\, 24-year-old Mariangelie Ortiz leads a group of young residents who never thought they would become the leaders of their community\, nonetheless find themselves traveling to Washington D.C. to protest in the halls of Congress. Follow them in this coming of age story to find their power and begin creating a sustainable future for themselves and their community. \nProfessor Mario Marzán is an artist who creates work about the constantly shifting\, changing and evolving negotiation of liminal spaces in relation to individual and cultural identities and histories. His research interests include landscape drawing and painting\, investigations of place and space as a way to discuss identity\, and maps as modes of representation. Among drawing courses\, Professor Marzán teaches an immersive Walking Seminar course on the intersections of art and nature during UNC Maymesters. An avid hiker and long distance backpacker\, Mario carries a NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute Wilderness First Aid certification and has walked both the Camino del Norte and the Camino Frances. He holds a BFA from Bowling Green University and a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. \nEli Jacobs-Fantauzzi is an award-winning filmmaker and currently the director of FistUp.TV\, a production company that documents people’s stories from around the world as a way to expand community awareness around issues of social responsibility and cultural identity. His work has circulated through the National Broadcast: Free Speech TV\, Teaching Channel\, PBS\, and Vibe magazine. He is the cofounder of Defend Puerto Rico\, a multimedia project designed to document and celebrate Puerto Rican creativity\, resilience\, and resistance\, and he curates the annual Fist Up Film Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area. His dedication to his craft is deeply connected to his commitment to social justice and belief in the transformative power of film. He is a graduate of the University of California\, Berkeley\, and holds an MA degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. \n  \nREGISTER

Lujan’s work in anthropology and buisness provides a unique lens for discussing migration and integration in the exhibition. \nIsabela Lujan is a Residential and Commercial Realtor\, business owner\, founder and co-chair of the Latin American Business Council (LABC) together with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. She is avidly involved with various local organizations that support and promote the Latinx Community in the Cape Fear Region. Her goal is to help the families\, small businesses\, and entrepreneurs of her community in gaining visibility and exposure\, by serving as a bridge for cultural integration\, and providing assistance to those in the process of becoming home and business owners. Originally from Venezuela\, Ms. Lujan studied Anthropology at the Central University of Venezuela\, Caracas. \n  \nREGISTER

DESCRIPTION:Free \nDonations Appreciated \n  \nCAM is honored to host our annual celebration of local artist Minnie Evans!  \n12-12:30 PM \nArt Activities  \n  \n1 PM Performance\, Joyce Grear as Miss Minnie \nRegistration Required; Suggested Donation: $10 \nMiss Minnie\, a biographical sketch performed by Joyce Grear \nThis monologue\, written by Ben Steelman\, captures the deep connection between Minnie’s spiritual and artistic life. \nJoyce Grear is a native of Wilmington who uses storytelling to teach and to build community.  She has toured the U.S. since 1987 bringing to life many African American heroines whose stories she feels inspired to share.  Her research into Evans dates to the dedication of the Bottle House that honors Minnie Evans’ time at Airlie Gardens.  Joyce is the “griot” of Wilmington\, teaching all ages through workshops\, plays\, and non-profit programs throughout North Carolina. \n  \nREGISTER \n  \n2-3 PM Work-in Progress Film Screening and Slide Presentation with Director Linda Royal and Dr. Elizabeth Penton  \nMinnie Evans\, compelled by dreams and visions throughout her life\, embraced the calling to “draw or die” in 1935.  Well known for her gardens and spiritual imagery\, Evans added to her body of work daily with paintings and drawings in wax crayons and graphite. \nThe Ackland Art Museum of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill holds an important painting by Minnie Evans that is unusual in style and story. Come hear about the World War II context and the fascinating twists and turns that culminate in this work by Wilmington’s famous Artist. \nAt 2:30 PM\, Elizabeth Penton will present rarely seen drawings by Minnie Evans from the CAM’s slide archive featuring an important motif in the artist’s work: the sunrise.    \nLinda Royal and Liz Penton are collaborating with the Cameron Art Museum on a documentary film titled Minnie Evans: Draw or Die.  With never before published historical photographs\, pictures by the artist\, and interviews with the family\, the film is set for release in mid 2024.  Liz Penton\, former university instructor and adjunct at UNCW\, is also researching a book on Evans’s life and art. Minnie Evans 1892-1987: A Beautiful Light. \nDr. Elizabeth Penton is from Wilmington and earned a PhD in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She held positions as an instructor and administrator at the university level for over 30 years prior to retiring this past spring. Her area of teaching expertise is Non-Western Art. A deep interest in visionary art and personal connection to the Wrightsville Sound community continue to inspire her work on Evans. \nLinda Royal’s documentaries have won awards at U.S. and foreign film festivals and reached audiences globally through educational use\, community events and corporate screenings. Her film’s topics have included artist Clyde Jones\, grassroots theater\, environmental justice and plastic pollution. She first saw art by Minnie Evans at her friend Liz Penton’s home and was inspired by the documentary The Angel That Stands by Me to direct a new project about Evans for 21st century audiences. \n  \nREGISTER \n

SUMMARY:TRIAD feat. Christian Tamburr\, Dominick Farinacci\, and Michael Ward-Bergmen
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $35; Not Yet Members: $55 \n  \nTRIAD weaves together diverse musical worlds in an exciting display of musical interplay and visual collaboration. The chamber ensemble pulls influences from jazz\, blues\, orchestral and the music of Argentina\, Brazil and beyond. From Kurt Veil to John Mayer\, Astor Piazzolla to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins\, Jacques Brel to Puccini and more. TRIAD bridges these musical worlds with three unique musical voices that generally don’t overlap: trumpet\, accordion\, and marimba. The ensemble features renowned trumpeter Dominick Farinacci\, vibraphonist/marimbaist Christian Tamburr\, and accordionist Michael Ward Bergeman who first collaborated for a residency in London’s West End\, in collaboration with the New Generation Festival. The ensemble premiered their project TRIAD in 2022 at the TRI-C Jazz Festival\, Lincoln Center in NYC and a 4 night residency at Birdland Jazz Club in NYC \n  \n\nDOMINICK FARINACCI – Trumpet  \n\n\nTrumpeter Dominick Farinacci was named the very first Global Ambassador to Jazz at Lincoln Center by Wynton Marsalis\, working to further integrate music into communities around the world in culturally collaborative ways. He graduated from The Juilliard School in 2005 launching his career in Japan with a prolific run of eight albums\, later releasing four more globally. He has performed in more than 120 cities in 14 countries around the world\, was a featured guest on ABC’s Good Morning \n\n\nAmerica\, and is a TED Speaker. Music icon Quincy Jones says of Dominick’s accomplishments in performance\, recording\, education & advocacy\, “This kid is 360 degrees!” Dominick has been successful in his personal endeavors on bringing music into the community through Arts and Wellness & Education. He was invited by TED to be a TED Speaker at the 2014 TED MED conference at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. He is a featured performer for the Cleveland Clinic in both Ohio and Abu Dhabi\, and organized the very first jazz performance for patients in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic and the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation. \n\n\nFor Dominick\, music and health go hand in hand\, most recently organizing panel discussions around patient-doctor communication through music with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. Dominick has been a leading advocate in music education development\, most recently featured at the Community College Association of America in D.C. He served as Music Consultant to the Amy Winehouse Foundation\, and is Artist in Residence at the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland\, Ohio. His educational reach recently expanded to the GCC\, in schools such as Weill Cornell Medical College\, Qatar Music Academy\, the American School of Doha among others. \n\n\nHis most recent recording “Short Stories” is produced by four-time Grammy Award winning producer Tommy LiPuma. This was Tommy & Dominick’s first collaboration\, and was recorded in their hometown of Cleveland at the Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts. Dominick is signed to Mack Avenue Records. \n\n\n  \n\n\nCHRISTIAN TAMBURR – Marimba / Vibraphone \n\n\nChristian Tamburr is an internationally renowned vibraphonist\, pianist\, composer and arranger with touring and performances in over 71 countries around the world. Downbeat Magazine recognized him with the “Outstanding Solo Jazz Performance” award and is a 5-Time “Critics Choice Top Rising Star” award recipient on vibraphone. He leads his own critically acclaimed touring ensemble with recent performances at the Kennedy Center\, The Newport Jazz Festival\, and Lincoln Center \n\n\nChristian has been responsible for the development of multiple headlineshows and touring projects around the world\, including Between the Lines (Palazzo Hotel\, Las Vegas)\, Modern Warrior LIVE (On Tour)\, Soundtrack (The Westgate\, Las Vegas) and collaborations with Cirque du Soleil\, Spiegelworld Productions and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. In addition to his public performances\, Christian is CEO and facilitator of Sonic Leadership\, a musically inspired program on leadership and inclusion with clients such as GOOGLE\, Cisco Systems\, Amazon and Starwood Hotels. Christian is currently the musical director/pianist for 2018 Grammy nominated vocalist Clint Holmes\, 2022 NBC “The Voice” star Wendy Moten\, and singer- songwriter/cellist Shana Tucker. \n\n\nChristian worked as musical director and pianist for Latin vocal legend Julio Iglesias (06’-09’)\, Cirque du Soleil in Macau China and Penn & Teller. He has performed private concerts for NBA basketball legend Michael Jordan\, and was hired to entertain at the highly publicized surprise birthday party for actress Julia Roberts\, in New York City. Christian’s first album “Move” sold over eighty-thousand copies and was released as a part of a Starbucks Gift Set available nationally. From 2013 to 2016 Christian toured on behalf of Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC as a Global Ambassador to Arts and Education in the U.A.E. and Asia. \n\n\nChristian and his groups have performed at some of the most prestigious venues around the world including The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC)\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center (NYC)\, Birdland (NYC)\, The Jazz Showcase\, The Brubeck Institute (Stockton\, CA) Yoshi’s Jazz Club (Oakland\, CA)\, Pizza Express Dean Street (London)\, Olympia Theater (Paris)\, Jazz at the St. Regis (Doha\, Qatar)\, The Central (Shanghai\, China)\, Motion Blue (Tokyo)\, Monte Casino (Cape Town\, South Africa)\, The Bellagio Hotel and Casino (Las Vegas)\, and The North Sea Jazz Festival (Amsterdam). \n\n\n  \n\n\nMICHAEL WARD BERGEMAN – Accordion \n\n\nMICHAEL WARD-BERGMAN is a passionate performer\, songwriterand composer.  His sensitive and creative approach to music making has led to performances and collaborations with world-class musicians and composers from across a wide range of genres. In 2011 he launched his GIG 365 project\, which saw him performing at least one gig for every day of 2011. Performances took place at an incredibly diverse range of venues in over thirty-five states and nine countries.  Highlights included performances at Gainesville Correctional Facility\, Harvard Business School with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble\, and on the streets of New Orleans. \n\n\nWard-Bergeman has enjoyed a close friendship and working relationship with composer Osvaldo Golijov for over a decade. His work with the hyper-accordion (an acoustic accordion with extended range and expressive capabilities of his own design) has been featured in many of Golijov’s compositions. Ward-Bergeman’s electro-acoustic compositions have won international awards and he has premiered new works written for vocalists Dawn Upshaw and Christina Courtin at Carnegie Hall. In 2011 he was commissioned to compose for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. He began his work with the group as a guest artist during workshops and performances at Harvard University. \n\n\nWard-Bergeman is a founding member of the North American Roots music trio Groanbox. SUMMARY:Equitable Design in Architecture: Reflection of a Moment with Charles Boney and Danny Adams
DESCRIPTION:Free with Museum Admission \n  \nIn 2022\, LS3P completed the installation of the first USCT Park in the nation\, located on CAM’s grounds. The opening of the park marked the one-year anniversary of the unveiling of Boundless. We welcome Charles Boney and Danny Adams for a presentation to our community. \nCharles and Danny will engage in a discussion centered on the multifaceted dimensions of designing spaces dedicated to memory\, retrospection\, and education. This presentation delves into the dynamic realm of memorialization\, scrutinizing various approaches and historical periods. It culminates with an exploration of the USCT Memorial. These case studies span a spectrum of influence\, size\, material composition\, political significance\, and geographical context. Simultaneously embracing the past and the future\, the design of the USCT Memorial encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the space\, forging personal connections to the installation’s profound meaning. This approach elevates the emotional resonance of the experience. As we evolve in our perspectives on remembrance\, reflection\, and education\, we are reshaping how we invest in\, design\, and inhabit spatial relationships\, fostering inclusivity and diversity in engagement. \n  \nCharles Boney began his service to his architectural firm LS3P in 1978. Charles served as principal architect for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Governors’ Village\, an award-winning\, innovative approach to educational design which created for a “village” for over 4\,800 students. He was principal architect for Union County Schools’ Weddington High School\, which led to over $100M in further design work for this client. His work encompasses numerous comprehensive renovation projects\, including three schools designed by the firm in 1924 and the award-winning Thalian Hall historic theatre renovations. Higher education clients include numerous community colleges and UNC at Wilmington. \nA lifelong resident of Wilmington\, Chris learned the value of design at an early age\, through the eyes of his architect father\, Charlie Boney.  He has continued his family’s commitment to improving the built environment\, contributing to the community\, and to fostering issues of social equity. \n  \nFirmwide Design Leader Danny Adams joined LS3P in 2009\, and brings over 23 years of experience in both public and private projects throughout North Carolina and beyond. His design and project management experience includes local\, national\, and international projects in diverse practice areas. \nWhile practicing in Raleigh\, NC\, and Washington\, DC\, his project experience has ranged from residential and commercial adaptive reuse projects to major corporate mixed-use architectural projects to urban and civic master plans and redevelopment studies. \nOutside of LS3P\, Danny continues to be involved with community outreach programs through the Wilmington AIA and UNCW Coastal Engineering Advisory Board. He is a professional architectural and photojournalistic photographer. \n  \nREGISTER

Join us for a discussion of Solito\, written by Javier Zamora. This memoir tells the story of his 3\,000-mile journey to the U.S which he undertook at the age of nine. \nDr. Sotelo states\, “This travel book is a rare\, eye-opening rendition of the brutal reality of border crossing – by walking all the way from there to here. At the same time\, it is an affirmation of solidarity\, as any traveler needs companions.” \nMiguel Rojas-Sotelo works at the intersection of critical human geography\, ethnic studies\, visual anthropology\, environmental and health humanities and cultural theory. As scholar\, filmmaker\, visual artist\, and media activist he studies how communities of color (indigenous and migrants) and natural spaces are shaped by modernity and how they mobilize to adapt and resist.
