SUMMARY:Angela Bingham Trio
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $35; Not Yet Members: $55 \n  \nJazz Vocalist Angela Bingham will perform with Grant Osborne on piano and Scott Sawyer on Guitar. Her trio will feature music from the American songbook and beyond\, with a focus on the great female composers & lyricists. \nRaleigh\, North Carolina based jazz vocalist Angela Bingham has been a singer her entire life. She began studying piano and performing from the American songbook at age 5 in her home of the San Francisco Bay Area. She studied jazz in her teens and early 20s under the direction of Roger Letson at De Anza College\, and went on to gain training through workshops and private lessons with some of the world’s most well known jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. \nBingham officially began her career in 1999 in Salt Lake City\, Utah. There\, she honed her craft working extensively with guitar virtuoso Kenji Aihara and Utah’s pre-eminent tenor saxophonist David Halliday. She left Utah and moved to New York City in 2005\, where she held down a monthly residency for five years at the now (sadly defunct) Total Wine Bar\, garnering a delightfully loyal Brooklyn fan base. During this time\, she began working with many of New York’s most heavyweight jazz musicians and sitting in and performing at venues large and small throughout the city including Birdland\, Smalls\, and others. She also held down a steady performance schedule at New York’s famed Bar Next Door\, a coveted venue for New York jazz musicians. \nBingham’s singing is characterized by the qualities of honest expression\, solid swinging and an emphasis on the blues. Of her decision to sing jazz\, Angela says\, “First and foremost\, I am an entertainer and a storyteller\, and I use my voice to help people feel their emotions. I want to bring a message of healing through these stories set to music. Jazz is the perfect format for this\, because the stories can go in many musical directions. I know that my job is to sing the story\, to approach the music as an improvisational musician\, and to commune with the audience through laughter\, tears and everything in between. It is not enough to have a pretty voice. It goes way beyond that. It’s letting your audience feel that you are in this with them.” \n  \nJazz at CAM is sponsored in part by  \n                \nIsabella Hinds\nNancie and James Kennedy\nDr. William Malloy and Maxine Terry\nDr. Acquenetta Wheeler \n  \nREGISTER \n  \nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Virtual Conversation: Talk About Art with Ana Edwards

As founding chair of the Defenders’ Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project (2004)\, and in collaboration with other community organizations\, she contributed to the reclamation of Richmond’s first municipal African Burial Ground and leads the in-progress community campaign to establish a Memorial Park in Shockoe Bottom\, the 19th century epicenter of the US domestic slave trade and birth district of the city of Richmond–a project now part of the city’s strategic development plan. Her advocacy work includes education\, social justice and historic preservation advocacy for African American spaces\, especially pre and post emancipation burial places–among them VCU East Marshall Street Well Project\, Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Hill African\, East End and Evergreen cemeteries. \n  \n  \nREGISTER \n  \nImage Credit (Right): Sonya Clark (American\, b. 1967)\, Monumental Cloth (old) 1/2 edition. SUMMARY:Boundless Lecture & Conversation Series: Steve Nunez
DESCRIPTION:Free with Museum Admission \n  \nCurating Ghosts: Abolition\, US Colored Troops\, and the Future of Haunted Memory examines the rich legacy of the US Colored Troop embodied commitment to\, and bodily risk for\, the cause of revolutionary abolitionism. Through a photographer’s lens\, revolutionary theorist Steve Núñez reflects on Stephen Hayes’ Boundless installation at CAM as a shining example of the historical diligence and epistemic integrity required to reckon with the ongoing legacies of the violence central to capitalist systems. \nIn this community conversation commemorating the glorious US Colored Troop victory at the Battle of Forks Road that paved the way for the Confederate surrender at Appomattox\, Núñez shares research from his forthcoming dissertation project\, Abolition as Horizon & Anchor: Sociogeny\, Anti-Violent Insurgency\, and Militant Hope\, which highlights thematic cohesion in abolitionist thought over time through philosophical portraits of David Walker & Maria Stewart\, Frederick Douglass & Harriet Jacobs\, W.E.B. Du Bois & Lucy Parsons\, and George Jackson & Angela Davis. The talk will emphasize philosophical themes such as the centrality of the Southern roots of militant abolitionism\, existential vs. political freedom\, ignorance & responsibility\, and the spectre of “hauntology”. \nImportantly\, the conversation will iterate the moral necessity of curating public (and quasi-public) spaces that tell the truth about the unsavory histories and haunted legacies that shape the spaces we move through today as a necessary condition for building just worlds of tomorrow. \nSteve Núñez (he/they) is a truth-telling storyteller\, graphic artist & photographer\, educator\, and revolutionary theorist from Wilmington\, NC. As Steve performed contract work for the US Department of State as a Personal Security Specialist on an Embassy Protection Detail in Kabul\, Afghanistan\, they sought education as a tool to begin seriously process their personal relationship to structural violence and more intentionally interrogate the relationship between Islamophobia\, anti-Blackness\, and US public policy. As a scholar and champion of the insurgent abolitionist tradition of Southeastern North Carolina advanced through David Walker\, Steve is a vocal proponent and militant practitioner of the contemporary movement to abolish the punishment enterprise\, the ideology of racial capitalism at its root\, and the carceral logics relying on violent punishment as an appropriate mechanism of social control. \nSteve holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with majors in Philosophy & Religion (dual concentration) and Anthropology and minor certificates in Classical Studies and Middle East & Islamic Studies from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW) as well as a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics from Harvard Divinity School. He is currently an advanced Doctoral Candidate in the Philosophy Department at the University of Connecticut (UConn) with areas of specialization in existential phenomenology\, Africana philosophy\, decolonial theory\, and abolition & carceral studies. He is actively completing research for a dissertation entitled “Abolition as Horizon and Anchor: Sociogeny\, Insurgency\, and Hope\,” a philosophical history which excavates the Black existential roots of abolitionism in the US through philosophical portraits of the abolitionist thought and practice of David Walker and Maria Stewart\, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs\, W.E.B. Du Bois and Lucy Parsons\, and George Jackson and Angela Davis. \n  \nSponsored in part by \n \n  \nREGISTER \n  \nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations\, at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

The film paints a more complicated picture of this story than might be seen at first glance\, exploring the lives of the Black\, white\, and Indigenous men who fought at the Battle of Forks Road where Cameron Art Museum now stands. Legacy captures the resilience of these men\, the strength of the communities they built\, and the impact that they have had on our region\, our state\, and our country.
