SUMMARY:CAM at the Movies: Legacy
DESCRIPTION:CAM at the Movies: Legacy\n\n\nFriday\, June 26\n\n\n7:30-9:30PM\n\n\nTicketed and Hosted through Jengo’s Playhouse\n\n\nJengo’s Playhouse\, 815 Princess St\, Wilmington\, NC 28401\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCAM at the Movies invites guests to join us at Jengo’s Playhouse for a curated film series featuring screenings and conversations with artists\, curators\, and cultural leaders. Connected directly to CAM exhibitions and interpretive initiatives\, each event offers an opportunity to experience cinema in an intimate setting while engaging in thoughtful dialogue with fellow viewers. \nPresented in partnership with Cucalorus Film Foundation\, this screening features Legacy\, a short film by filmmaker Adam Alphin\, produced by Daniel Jones and Heather Wilson of CAM. \nLegacy chronicles the oral histories of descendants of the United States Colored Troops\, weaving together the stories of several USCT soldiers whose lives and legacies shaped communities across eastern North Carolina. The film highlights Ceasar Evans\, who escaped slavery at nineteen to join the USCT before resettling in the Cape Fear region; Joseph Cherry and Jesse Smallwood\, who helped build community in Indian Woods near New Bern following their military service; Rev. William Hammond Hunter of the 4th USCT\, whose leadership in Wilmington contributed to the founding of St. Stephen AME Church; and Charles H. Whitney of the 37th USCT\, a white abolitionist from Massachusetts. \nThrough oral histories and regional storytelling\, Legacy explores resilience\, community building\, and the enduring impact of these individuals on our region\, state\, and country. \nFollowing the screening\, guests are invited to remain for a special conversation with filmmaker Adam Alphin and producer Daniel Jones\, who will discuss the film’s research\, production process\, and its connection to CAM’s ongoing interpretive work surrounding the United States Colored Troops and the history of the museum site. \nTickets are $10 \nRegister \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a co-partnership screening with the Cucalorus Film Foundation.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:CAM After Dark: “The Shape of Air” Gallery Talk with A.V. Rankin
DESCRIPTION:CAM After Dark: “The Shape of Air” Gallery Talk with A.V. Rankin\nThursday\, July 9\, 6:30–7:30 PM\n\n\nHughes Wing \nFree with museum admission \nStudents free with valid ID\n \n\n\nSpend the evening with artist A.V. Rankin for a gallery talk exploring the cultural and artistic history of inflatable sculpture and air-based forms.\n\n\n \nDrawing connections among works by Andy Warhol\, Mike Kelley\, Nick Cave\, and artists featured in Fresh Air: Inflatable Sculptures\, Rankin will examine how air functions as both a material and a symbol across art\, technology\, and the collective imagination.\n\n\n \nDiscover how softness\, mass-produced objects\, and cultural ephemera challenge traditional ideas of sculpture. The conversation will also consider inflatables as objects of tenderness and vulnerability\, positioned between ecological awareness and social experimentation.\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\n \n\n\n\nAna Vizcarra Rankin (A.V.) is a Uruguayan-American artist whose work explores the intersections of art\, science\, environmental stewardship\, and human perception. Through painting\, drawing\, installation\, and participatory projects\, she investigates how mapping\, data visualization\, astronomy\, and material culture shape our understanding of the world and our place within it.\n \nA.V. (pronounced Ay-vee) works from Painted Foot Art Lab in downtown Wilmington\, NC. She is the founder of BDG International\, a curatorial exchange program dedicated to grassroots collaboration and cultural exchange\, and serves as part-time Faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. SUMMARY:Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness Meditation in the Galleries\nFriday\, July 17\, 9 – 9:50 AM | $5 suggested donation\n\n\nMindfulness is the practice of bringing attention to the present moment and meeting whatever arises without judgment. Heidi completely fell in love with the practice and the instructor. The establishment would later become what is now Wilmington Yoga Center and the instructor was Kristin Cooper-Gulak who would later go on to be Heidi’s mentor. Heidi’s journey in yoga would continue under the teachings of Holler Brown and Larry Hobbs who both guided her in a strong ashtanga practice. Later becoming an elementary school teacher\, Heidi saw the need for yoga in schools and in the lives of children and adolescents. \nIn 2012 she received her ChildLight Children’s Yoga certification and began a successful after school yoga program at the school where she was teaching. Still wanting more knowledge of yoga variations\, she completed her Goddess Yoga training and received certification in 2016 under Fallon Cattano. In 2018\, during her summer break from school\, Heidi began working alongside Heather Lilly and Sylvia Jabaley with Yoga Village to bring yoga to underprivileged communities. Returning to her original yoga mentor\, Kristin Cooper-Gulak and Jessica Bichler\, Heidi would receive her RYT200 in Kunga Yoga. Soon after\, she began teaching children and teen classes at Wilmington Yoga Center where she continues to draw awareness and mindfulness to children of all ages. In 2019\, Heidi would complete her Trauma Informed Yoga certification under the teachings of Hala Khouri where she is led to bring yoga to those seeking healing\, acceptance\, and connection. \n  \nWellness at CAM\n\nAt CAM\, we understand the vital role that art plays in health.
