SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Jazz@CAM: Jazz Legacy Project Presents Billie Holiday ft. Maria Howell
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $35\nNon-Members: $55\nStudents: $15 \n\nJoin us at Jazz@CAM for an unforgettable evening as The Jazz Legacy Project presents Billie Holiday: God Bless the Child feat. Maria Howell. We will detail how Billie Holiday developed her unique vocal style and blazed a trail for women and African Americans\, paving the way for future generations. This show features a multimedia experience of live music\, narration\, images\, and video footage. \n\nBillie Holiday’s unique vocal approach and advanced sense of rhythm made her one of the most important and influential vocalists in American history. Her relentless fight to be treated as an equal—as a musician\, a female\, and an African-American—made her one of the most significant American figures of the 20th century. \nAbout The Jazz Legacy Project: \nCreated in 2015 by Justin Varnes while teaching Jazz History at Georgia State University\, The Jazz Legacy Project (JLP) has an ongoing residency at the Velvet Note Jazz Club in Atlanta\, where they have been selling out their performances for six years. The project combines playing records and storytelling about jazz artists\, making it a big success both in the classroom and on stage. \nMaria Howell: \nMaria Howell is an actor and vocalist known for her roles in The Color Purple\, Hidden Figures\, Hunger Games\, The Blind Side\, and the TV series Revolution. Her singing career blossomed after her role as the choir soloist in The Color Purple\, leading to performances with Nancy Wilson\, George Benson\, Ray Charles\, Earl Klugh\, and Ronnie Laws. A North Carolina native\, Maria also dedicates her downtime to teaching and supporting charities like Mothers without Students. \n\n\n\nJazz at CAM is sponsored in part by \n \nAnd through the generosity of these individuals:\nIsabella Hinds\nNancie and Jim Kennedy\nDr. William Malloy\nMs. Maxine Terry\nDr. Acquenetta Wheeler \nhttps://cameronartmuseum.org/jazz-cam/ \nREGISTER

Having grown up immersed in the sounds of everything from Dr. John to Tommy Jarrell\, his musical sensibility has an incredibly intuitive flow\, and his touch on the piano has always been beautifully unique. With that much natural talent\, he wouldn’t necessarily have had to push himself to the limits he has\, and it’s been a wonder to witness his evolution into one of the greatest working organ and keyboard players today. His sincerity cuts straight through every note he plays\, with a heartfelt smile and mischief-tinged eyes\, and his presence in any room feels like a big hug.” – Ric Robertson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nIn 2017\, Fribush graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. During that time he worked with influential mentors like Ran Blake\, Jason Moran\, Jamie Saft\, Dennis Montgomery III\, Cecil McBee\, John Medeski and more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFribush has recently produced and recorded music with Charlie Hunter\, Lucius\, Dori Freeman\, Ric Robertson\, MC Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger)\, Joel Savoy\, Viv and Riley\, Taylor Meier (Caamp)\, California Honey Drops and more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021 Fribush joined Hiss Golden Messenger\, a band from Durham\, NC.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFribush released his sophomore record ‘People Please’ in March of 2024.\n\n\nPNC USCT PARK\nThe PNC USCT Park is the only sculpture park in the nation created to honor the United States Colored Troops and their fight for freedom. The park is located on museum grounds\, which was the site of the Battle of Forks Road. SUMMARY:The Spirit of Jazz in NC: John Brown and Romare Bearden
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate art and music with the Spirit of Jazz in NC\, an event that includes a film screening\, performance\, conversation\, and museum tour. \nNorth Carolina has long been home to legends in both art and music. The Spirit of Jazz honors two of them—Romare Bearden of Charlotte\, NC\, whose work is featured in Close to Home\, and a living legend of jazz\, John Brown\, the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University. \nThe afternoon begins with a screening of One Night in Kernersville\, a short documentary by Rodrigo Dorfman following jazz bassist John Brown’s journey as he makes a big band recording in Kernersville\, NC. A successful bassist\, composer\, educator\, and actor\, John has a long history of performance excellence. At the age of 13\, he began performing with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. He was playing Principal Bass with that orchestra and performing with the Florence Symphony in South Carolina while still in high school. \nAfter a Q&A session about the film with Adrienne Nirdé\, the Director of the NC African American Heritage Commission\, John takes to the stage with a trio of friends to weave the story of jazz across North Carolina’s music trails. Romare Bearden’s paintings and prints paint a backdrop to the performance. Bearden’s passion for jazz began at an early age\, and he kept his art studio at the Apollo Theater building\, where the hum of jazz could always be heard.  \nStay after the performance to see Bearden’s works in person on a tour of Close to Home on the exhibition’s final weekend. \n\nTICKETS\nTickets are $20 per Adult CAM Members; $25 per Adult Not-Yet-Members\, $10 for Students. \n  \n\nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Reading with David Gessner: The Book of Flaco
DESCRIPTION:Join best-selling nature writer David Gessner for an insightful conversation about his latest work\, chronicling the extraordinary journey of Flaco\, “the world’s most famous bird.” In this powerful parable of freedom\, wildness\, and urban ecosystems\, Gessner delves into the year-long odyssey of Flaco\, a Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped captivity in February 2023 and made Central Park his new home. This compelling narrative serves as a cautionary tale about our urban environments and the impact of human activity on wildlife. \nDon’t miss this thought-provoking reading that highlights the connection between nature and urban life. \nFree; $5 donations suggested \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDavid Gessner is the author of thirteen books that blend nature\, humor\, memoir\, and environmentalism\, including the New York Times bestselling All the Wild That Remains. Gessner is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where he also founded the literary magazine Ecotone. His own magazine publications include pieces in the New York Times Magazine\, Outside\, Orion\, and others. In 2017\, he hosted the National Geographic Explorer show The Call of the Wild. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nIn the book\, Flaco’s escape sparked controversy\, dividing opinions between those advocating for his return to the zoo and supporters of the “Free Flaco” movement. And his end—with a grim necropsy revealing Flaco had suffered a viral infection from eating pigeons and had multiple rodenticides in his system—serves as a Rachel Carson-esque warning about the harm we’ve done to our urban environments\, inspiring the passage of long-sought legislation protecting urban birds and regulations meant to reduce the use of rodenticides in New York City. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Jazz@CAM: The Dominican Jazz Project
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $35\nNot-Yet Members: $55\nStudents: $15 \n\n\nThe Dominican Jazz Project began when Dominican-born jazz artist\, Guillo Carias\, invited American jazz pianist and composer\, Stephen Anderson\, to perform with him and jazz artists living in the Dominican Republic for the 2014 Jazzomania Jazz Festival in Santo Domingo\, Dominican Republic that was hosted by Tony Dominguez and Carlos Francisco Elías.  The concert and associated clinic went beautifully\, and the drummer\, Guy Frómeta\, invited Anderson to return to Santo Domingo to perform with him in his group for the Casa de Teatro Jazz Festival a few months later.  It was there that Anderson met Sandy Gabriel\, a nationally renowned tenor saxophonist.  Their collective friendship grew further with that experience\, and following the festival\, they agreed to record together.  The result was their 2016 self-titled CD release\, The Dominican Jazz Project\, that was recorded in the days following the UNC Summer Jazz Workshop where the artists served as guest faculty and where Anderson serves as director.  Soon after\, renowned Dominican percussionist\, David Almengod\, joined the group.  \n\n\n\nMUSICIANS:\nSandy Gabriel\, saxophones \nMayquel González\, trumpet \nCarlos Luis\, guitar/voice \nStephen Anderson\, piano  \nRamón Vázquez\, bass \nGuy Frómeta\, drums \nDavid Almengod\, percussion\, voice \n\n\n\nJazz at CAM is sponsored in part by \n \n  \nAnd through the generosity of these individuals:\nIsabella Hinds\nNancie and Jim Kennedy\nDr. William Malloy\nMs. Maxine Terry\nDr. Acquenetta Wheeler \n  \nREGISTER
