Located in PNC USCT Park on CAM’s grounds\, this striking monument honors the legacy of the United States Colored Troops (USCT)—the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Forks Road during the Civil War in 1865.\n\nThe sculpture was created from casts of the features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants\, re-enactors\, veterans\, and community leaders. Boundless was unveiled on November 13\, 2021\, and is on permanent view in the PNC USCT Park on the museum grounds. DESCRIPTION:CAM After Dark: Illustrated Lecture with Mel Chin\nThursday\, September 10th\, 6:30–7:30 PM\n\n\nReception Hall\nCAM Members $10 | Not Yet Members $15 | Students & Educators Free\nSpend an evening with acclaimed conceptual artist Mel Chin during a special illustrated lecture at CAM.\n\n\n\n\n\nKnown for an expansive creative practice that crosses sculpture\, installation\, technology\, environmental intervention\, and collaborative public art\, Chin uses art to engage with complex social\, political\, and environmental issues. Through images and conversation\, explore groundbreaking projects from throughout his influential career and the ideas that continue to shape his work. \nAbout the Artist\nMel Chin (b. 1951\, Houston\, Texas) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work addresses environmental\, political\, and social issues through a wide range of media and collaborative approaches. He earned a B.A. from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in 1975. \nChin’s landmark projects include Revival Field (1990)\, a pioneering work exploring the use of plants to remove toxic metals from contaminated soil\, and Unmoored (2018)\, a large-scale public installation in New York City’s Times Square. DESCRIPTION:Boundless Tour in the PNC USCT Park – Free with Museum Admission\n\nStep into history with a guided tour of Boundless\, a life-size bronze sculpture by artist Stephen Hayes. Located in PNC USCT Park on CAM’s grounds\, this striking monument honors the legacy of the United States Colored Troops (USCT)—the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Forks Road during the Civil War in 1865.\n\nThe sculpture was created from casts of the features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants\, re-enactors\, veterans\, and community leaders. Boundless was unveiled on November 13\, 2021\, and is on permanent view in the PNC USCT Park on the museum grounds. The sculpture is deeply connected to our community’s history\, present\, and future. \n\n\nWhen: Every Friday from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM. DESCRIPTION:Jazz@CAM: Mangroove\nThursday\, October 1\n7 PM\nReception Hall \nCAM Members: $40\nNot-Yet Members: $60\nStudents: $15 \nExperience an evening of jazz\, Latin rhythms\, and polyrhythmic expression with Mangroove\, led by percussionist\, vocalist\, and bandleader Manny Santos. \nOriginally from New Bedford\, Massachusetts\, Santos began performing professionally at age 15. Drawing inspiration from his Cape Verdean heritage\, his music brings together jazz\, Latin traditions\, and global influences. While living in Boston\, Santos further developed his craft through studies at New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music\, becoming an accomplished conga player along the way. \nOver a career spanning more than 30 years\, Santos has performed with artists including Kurt Elling\, Donald Harrison\, Maurice Starr\, Steven Tyler\, Ran Blake\, Hilliard Greene\, Walter Beasley\, and the late Jaki Byard. \nAfter moving to Wilmington in 2012\, Santos created Mangroove\, a collaborative project featuring musicians from across the region. The group carries forward a gospel singing tradition passed down through generations of the Daniels family. Its members are descendants of Dorothy Vines Daniels of The Glorifying Vines Sisters\, the acclaimed eastern North Carolina gospel group founded by Dorothy and Johnny Ray Daniels. \nFaith & Harmony features Kadesha Speight\, Renay Sugg\, KeAmber Daniels\, Andrea Edwards\, Christy Moody\, and Tinesha Weaver. Since 1981\, GMCW has used music to promote equality\, advance justice\, and help overcome differences. \nToday\, the organization includes more than 250 singing members\, four select ensembles\, a dance company\, and a youth chorus. Shaped by gospel\, soul\, and jazz\, McPhatter blends tradition with a forward-looking approach to improvisation\, creating music that honors the past while making space for new expression. \nBorn in Kinston\, North Carolina\, and now based in Hartford\, Connecticut\, McPhatter began her musical journey at age three. Surrounded by a musical family and the traditions of the church\, she discovered early on the power of music to uplift\, connect\, and transform. Her later introduction to jazz expanded her musical vocabulary and sparked a lasting passion for improvisation. \nMcPhatter earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from North Carolina Central University in 2018 and completed her Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Hartford. \nHer performances invite listeners into a space of comfort\, reflection\, and joy.
