Reflect on the work of Jonathan Green and the paintings in the exhibition that mirror the Gullah Geechee environment\, history\, and traditions. \nStretching from Jacksonville\, North Carolina\, to Jacksonville\, Florida\, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor works to preserve and interpret the traditional cultural practices\, historic sites\, and natural resources connected to Gullah Geechee communities. Through this conversation\, discover the significant contributions Gullah Geechee people have made to American culture and history\, and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect their communities\, lands\, waters\, and traditions. \nAs the Corridor’s Resiliency Manager\, Erica focuses on climate resilience and preserving land and water. She will bring this environmental lens to the exhibition\, exploring the connections between people and place—from the sweetgrass woven into working baskets to the ancestral lands and Lowcountry landscapes represented in Green’s paintings. \nRegister\n\nAbout the speaker:\nERICA XAVIER-BEAUVOIR is a diverse human-centered public servant\, storyteller\, and community engagement professional with over 15 years of experience in the public safety sector. They are the Resiliency Manager with the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor\, extending their mission to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally lived in the coastal areas and sea islands of North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Georgia\, and Florida.  Creating mindful spaces for data gathering coupled with best-practice research\, Erica has led projects regarding food equity\, criminal justice\, and urban design thinking. She gained experience with land use and repurposing urban land to improve functionality in underserved communities. As a Death Doula and natural burial consultant\, Erica has first-hand knowledge regarding improving narratives in diverse communities to elevate and educate those seeking burial options. They hold a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice\, a Master’s in Emergency Management\, and a Doctorate in Metaphysics (nonsecular).

DESCRIPTION:Boundless Tour in the PNC USCT Park – Free with Museum Admission\n\nStep into history with a guided tour of Boundless\, a life-size bronze sculpture by artist Stephen Hayes. Located in PNC USCT Park on CAM’s grounds\, this striking monument honors the legacy of the United States Colored Troops (USCT)—the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Forks Road during the Civil War in 1865.\n\nThe sculpture was created from casts of the features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants\, re-enactors\, veterans\, and community leaders. Boundless was unveiled on November 13\, 2021\, and is on permanent view in the PNC USCT Park on the museum grounds. The group carries forward a gospel singing tradition passed down through generations of the Daniels family. Its members are descendants of Dorothy Vines Daniels of The Glorifying Vines Sisters\, the acclaimed eastern North Carolina gospel group founded by Dorothy and Johnny Ray Daniels. \nFaith & Harmony features Kadesha Speight\, Renay Sugg\, KeAmber Daniels\, Andrea Edwards\, Christy Moody\, and Tinesha Weaver. DESCRIPTION:Connections invites people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia and their caregivers to experience CAM in a supported environment designed to minimize stress and to provide a connection with the art thanks to support from Champion McDowell Davis Charitable Foundation. \n  \n\n\n\n\nOn Mondays\, when CAM is closed to the public\, guests enjoy a guided tour of the exhibitions led by CAM Connections Volunteers. Following the tour\, participants are encouraged to create artwork inspired by what they’ve seen. A longtime gospel performer\, she released her first single\, “Psalm 91\,” in 2013 and has since appeared in productions including Dreamgirls and Techmoja’s The Color Purple. \nCAM’s Sunset Performance Series brings together art\, music\, and social justice through free outdoor performances on the museum grounds near Boundless\, Stephen Hayes’s sculpture honoring the United States Colored Troops who fought in the Battle of Forks Road. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the performance at sunset. \nMore about Myra Graham Quince\nAlso known as MGQ\, she is an actress\, songwriter\, and singer with a full-bodied voice that lights up stages and captivates audiences. She has been singing since she was two years old and has worked tirelessly as a gospel singer. In August 2013\, MGQ released her first gospel single\, “Psalm 91\,” and has since released several singles. \nIn 2013 and 2020\, she was cast as Effie White in Dreamgirls\, and most recently played one of the church ladies in Techmoja’s production of The Color Purple. A selection of warm and savory Southern favorites will be available for purchase. \n\nAbout the artists:\nMary D. Williams is an accomplished gospel singer\, performer\, educator\, historian\, and scholar whose work explores the music\, history\, and cultural traditions of the Black South. She has performed at many colleges\, universities\, schools\, churches\, libraries\, and cultural institutions\, including the United States Congress and the North Carolina State Capitol\, as well as venues throughout the United States and abroad. Mary has appeared in film\, television\, and theater\, including Blood Done Sign My Name\, The Wronged Man\, and The Fire of Freedom: Abraham Galloway. Through performance\, teaching\, and storytelling\, Mary brings generations of voices and traditions to life for her audiences. She has received numerous honors and awards and is currently writing her first book about gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. \nNancy Pheasant is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a multimedia Indigenous artist who resides in the Wolftown community of the Qualla boundary in Cherokee\, NC. Specializing in shell carving\, Nancy creates intricate\, museum-quality gorgets and jewelry while preserving the traditional art form. She has also received recognition and blue ribbons for first place and best of show in the Cherokee fall festival art competition in 2013 and 2019. While passionate about sharing her culture through presentations\, demonstrations\, and traditional storytelling\, Nancy also creates beadwork\, gemstone jewelry\, and traditional Indigenous clothing and textiles. After retiring from a career as a North Carolina EMS paramedic\, Nancy now focuses on preserving traditional shell carving and sharing Cherokee culture through art\, demonstrations\, presentations\, and storytelling. \nParis Alexander’s work uniquely blends realism and abstraction\, exploring themes of nature\, human emotion\, and the passage of time. While working with materials such as clay and stone\, Paris creates pieces that engage with their surroundings. The human form has remained a central part of his work throughout his career\, allowing him to explore movement\, expression\, and the human experience. With more than 35 years as a professional artist\, Paris has exhibited his work nationally and internationally\, completing numerous private commissions and public art projects. His practice continues to evolve through experimentation with new materials\, techniques\, and approaches to form. \n\nAbout the guest curator:\nBrenda Miller Holmes is a collaborative community muralist\, educator\, arts administrator\, and public art consultant who has been facilitating community-engaged projects throughout North Carolina\, the San Francisco Bay Area\, and internationally for twenty years. Trained in an artistic approach that mirrors the principles of popular education\, her interest resides at the intersection of public art\, justice\, community empowerment\, and collaborative storytelling. Leveraging her experience as a community-based public artist and administrator\, her consulting work focuses on equity-based initiatives\, place-based storytelling\, and building capacity for emerging public artists. \n\nAbout the exhibition:\nEchoes of Us: North Carolina Storykeepers is a celebration of NC-based artists who work in service to the collective by lifting up the voices of NC communities through public art. DESCRIPTION:Boundless Tour in the PNC USCT Park – Free with Museum Admission\n\nStep into history with a guided tour of Boundless\, a life-size bronze sculpture by artist Stephen Hayes. Located in PNC USCT Park on CAM’s grounds\, this striking monument honors the legacy of the United States Colored Troops (USCT)—the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Forks Road during the Civil War in 1865.\n\nThe sculpture was created from casts of the features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants\, re-enactors\, veterans\, and community leaders. Boundless was unveiled on November 13\, 2021\, and is on permanent view in the PNC USCT Park on the museum grounds. The sculpture is deeply connected to our community’s history\, present\, and future. \n\n\nWhen: Every Friday from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Shaped by gospel\, soul\, and jazz\, McPhatter blends tradition with a forward-looking approach to improvisation\, creating music that honors the past while making space for new expression. \nBorn in Kinston\, North Carolina\, and now based in Hartford\, Connecticut\, McPhatter began her musical journey at age three. Surrounded by a musical family and the traditions of the church\, she discovered early on the power of music to uplift\, connect\, and transform. Her later introduction to jazz expanded her musical vocabulary and sparked a lasting passion for improvisation. \nMcPhatter earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from North Carolina Central University in 2018 and completed her Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the University of Hartford. \nHer performances invite listeners into a space of comfort\, reflection\, and joy.
