SUMMARY:Sean Higgins Trio
DESCRIPTION:CAM Members: $35; Not Yet Members: $55 \n  \nSean Higgins\, pianist and composer\, is an international touring and recording artist acting as a musical ambassador to audiences worldwide. While classically trained; his own group offers a modern take on the jazz trio configuration. Higgins enjoys exploring many musical genres and has played keyboards in many commercial settings such as R&B\, pop\, and fusion. \nHiggins completed a B.M. in Jazz Performance at UNC-Wilmington\, and an M.M. at Northern Illinois University\, where he received a full scholarship to lead and compose for the NIU Liberace Sextet. He has conducted clinics in numerous countries and is currently a faculty member of JazzArts Charlotte. \nHiggins has opened for Dave Holland\, Fourplay\, Joe Lovano\, Talib Kweli\, Ryan Cohen\, and Stefon Harris and Blackout. \nSome performances include successful 8-week US Jazz Ambassador tours of the Middle East and Russia with Alvin Atkinson & the Sound Merchants and a Japan tour with Akio Sasajima. He has played in many NYC clubs such as The Jazz Standard\, Smoke\, Dizzy’s-Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Lenox Lounge\, Shanghai Jazz\, St. Nick’s Pub\, and Minton’s Playhouse. Sean was a member of the Winard Harper Sextet for 2 years and has shared the stage with Antonio Hart\, Charles McPherson\, Stephanie Nakasian\, Wycliffe Gordon\, Fareed Haque\, Bobby Watson\, Terell Stafford\, John Clayton\, Jeff Clayton\, Russell Malone\, and many others. Jazz Festival performances include 2004 Iowa City\, 2004 Lima Peru\, 2005 Elmhurst\, 2006 Vail\, 2007 Tri-C\, 2007 Columbus Jazz & Ribs\, 2008 Cape May\, 2008 Usadba-Moscow\, 2008 Chelyabinsk\, 2008 Vladivostok\, 2009-12 Shanghai-JZ\, 2014 Changsha\, 2015 Xi’An\, 2016 Xiamen\, 2018-19 Charlotte\, 2022 Cheraw. \nDuring his 10 years based in Shanghai\, he toured China extensively as well as internationally with Karen Mok\, Shunza\, and Ronghao Li. \nSean released his debut trio album\, The New Thought feat. SUMMARY:Member Preview: "Stay in the Light: Works by Charles Edward Williams"
DESCRIPTION:In Stay in the Light\, South Carolina artist Charles Edward Williams draws inspiration from historical photography of the Civil Rights movement\, offering a contemporary response to social and political issues of the past and present. His paintings and installation works incorporate a strong use of color and gesture\, inviting a focus on human emotion and our connectedness and commonality. Stay in the Light includes new work created for this exhibition\, as well as work from Williams’ Sun and Light series. Ewa’s research and teaching explores the social and political context surrounding art\, asking important questions around commemoration and sometimes omission of histories. \nEwa Matyczyk is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of North Carolina\, Wilmington. She holds a PhD in the History of Art and Architecture from Boston University\, and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. The film paints a more complicated picture of this story than might be seen at first glance\, exploring the lives of the Black\, white\, and Indigenous men who fought at the Battle of Forks Road where Cameron Art Museum now stands. Legacy captures the resilience of these men\, the strength of the communities they built\, and the impact that they have had on our region\, our state\, and our country. DESCRIPTION:Free with Museum Admission \n  \nCurating Ghosts: Abolition\, US Colored Troops\, and the Future of Haunted Memory examines the rich legacy of the US Colored Troop embodied commitment to\, and bodily risk for\, the cause of revolutionary abolitionism. Through a photographer’s lens\, revolutionary theorist Steve Núñez reflects on Stephen Hayes’ Boundless installation at CAM as a shining example of the historical diligence and epistemic integrity required to reckon with the ongoing legacies of the violence central to capitalist systems. \nIn this community conversation commemorating the glorious US Colored Troop victory at the Battle of Forks Road that paved the way for the Confederate surrender at Appomattox\, Núñez shares research from his forthcoming dissertation project\, Abolition as Horizon & Anchor: Sociogeny\, Anti-Violent Insurgency\, and Militant Hope\, which highlights thematic cohesion in abolitionist thought over time through philosophical portraits of David Walker & Maria Stewart\, Frederick Douglass & Harriet Jacobs\, W.E.B. Du Bois & Lucy Parsons\, and George Jackson & Angela Davis. The talk will emphasize philosophical themes such as the centrality of the Southern roots of militant abolitionism\, existential vs. political freedom\, ignorance & responsibility\, and the spectre of “hauntology”. \nImportantly\, the conversation will iterate the moral necessity of curating public (and quasi-public) spaces that tell the truth about the unsavory histories and haunted legacies that shape the spaces we move through today as a necessary condition for building just worlds of tomorrow. \nSteve Núñez (he/they) is a truth-telling storyteller\, graphic artist & photographer\, educator\, and revolutionary theorist from Wilmington\, NC. As Steve performed contract work for the US Department of State as a Personal Security Specialist on an Embassy Protection Detail in Kabul\, Afghanistan\, they sought education as a tool to begin seriously process their personal relationship to structural violence and more intentionally interrogate the relationship between Islamophobia\, anti-Blackness\, and US public policy. As a scholar and champion of the insurgent abolitionist tradition of Southeastern North Carolina advanced through David Walker\, Steve is a vocal proponent and militant practitioner of the contemporary movement to abolish the punishment enterprise\, the ideology of racial capitalism at its root\, and the carceral logics relying on violent punishment as an appropriate mechanism of social control. \nSteve holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with majors in Philosophy & Religion (dual concentration) and Anthropology and minor certificates in Classical Studies and Middle East & Islamic Studies from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW) as well as a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) in Religion\, Ethics\, and Politics from Harvard Divinity School. He is currently an advanced Doctoral Candidate in the Philosophy Department at the University of Connecticut (UConn) with areas of specialization in existential phenomenology\, Africana philosophy\, decolonial theory\, and abolition & carceral studies. He is actively completing research for a dissertation entitled “Abolition as Horizon and Anchor: Sociogeny\, Insurgency\, and Hope\,” a philosophical history which excavates the Black existential roots of abolitionism in the US through philosophical portraits of the abolitionist thought and practice of David Walker and Maria Stewart\, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs\, W.E.B.
