SUMMARY:Sunset Performance Series: Durty Dub's Tribute to Charley Pride
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Performance Series: Durty Dub’s Tribute to Charley Pride\nThursday\, March 19\, 7:00 PM\nAt PNC USCT Park\, on CAM grounds | FREE; $5 Suggested Donation \nJoin us outside at the PNC USCT Park for an evening of classic country reimagined. In this intimate duo performance\, Durty Dub and powerhouse vocalist Myk’l Hanna breathe new life into the music of Charley Pride\, one of country’s most prolific and groundbreaking artists. With heartfelt storytelling and rich harmonies\, they’ll take you through Pride’s hits with a blend of soul\, gospel\, and reggae influences that feel both reverent and fresh. \nDurty Dub renders Charley Pride’s classic country anthems faithfully while refreshing some pieces with reggae\, soul and gospel adaptations. Tonight\, he’ll offer an intimate duo performance with vocalist Myk’l Hanna\, adding some background and fun stories about the man himself. Roll Pride! \nAs the sun sets over the Boundless installation by Stephen Hayes\, settle in for live music that celebrates legacy and genre-defying creativity. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy the laid-back\, community vibe CAM’s Sunset Performance Series is known for. Free and open to all. \nMore About the Artists:\nDurty Dub first learned who Charley Pride was from his grandmother after one fateful thanksgiving dinner in 2016. An article in Jet magazine led her to recount Pride’s incredible legacy\, including 36 #1 hit singles\, over 70 million albums sold\, 31 gold and 4 platinum albums – including one quadruple platinum. Also\, on RCA Records he is second in sales on RCA only to Elvis Presley. \nFascinated by the storied success of one of country music’s few (at the time) black artists\, Dub set out to digest Pride’s extensive catalog and learn more about the man. The next step was to put a tribute band together\, consisting of NC’s most versatile musicians\, including vocalist Michael Hanna\, percussionist Atiba Rorie [Africa Unplugged]\, bassist Kenny Phelps-McKeown [Ellis Dyson & The Shambles] & drummer Devin Fuller [Emily Musolino]. The band has also been joined on occasion by slide-guitar slinger\, Phil Cook [Bruce Hornsby\, Hiss Golden Messenger]. \nWith this personnel\, Dub soon found that he was able to render Pride’s classic country anthems faithfully while refreshing some of the pieces with reggae\, soul and gospel adaptations. Since then\, the project has gone on to share the stage with H.C. McEntire\, Gangstagrass\, and play the mainstage at the 2019 Beaufort Music Festival. \nSponsored in part by \n \nLearn more about Boundless and the PNC USCT Park here.

Boundless honors the USCT and their fight for citizenship and stands proudly on our museum grounds and as the centerpiece of this commemoration. \nSpend the day learning more about the USCT and this significant battle. \nRead about Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation‘s substantial investment in Boundless and its impact on our community \n10 AM-5 PM\nLearn about the lives of USCT with reenactors from Battery B. Family activities in CAM’s Reception Hall.  \n12 PM\nBattle of Forks Road Documentary\nThe Battle of Forks Road documentary looks closely at the story of this Civil War skirmish that led to the fall of Wilmington\, focusing on the victory of the United States Colored Troops and the significant impact they made in the Cape Fear Region. \n1 PM\nLegacy Short Film \nLegacy is a short film chronicling the oral histories of the descendants of the United States Colored Troops by filmmaker Adam Alphin. The film paints a more complicated picture of this story than might be seen at first glance\, exploring the lives of the Black\, white\, and Indigenous men who fought at the Battle of Forks Road where Cameron Art Museum now stands. Legacy captures the resilience of these men\, the strength of the communities they built\, and the impact that they have had on our region\, our state\, and our country. This film continues the work of Boundless\, the sculpture by American artist Stephen Hayes that was installed on the museum’s grounds in 2021. \n2 PM \nIllustrated Lecture – Ms. Chaitra Powell \n\nThrough the Archives: In Search of African American History\, Culture\, and Traditions.  Drawn from her 15 years of working in archives\, Powell will walk the audience through a myriad of examples and queries that help us consider what makes African American culture unique\, how does it fit into broader narratives of American history and what shape do our memories of this knowledge take? Where do these memories belong\, who decides what matters and how do we share it with future generations? These are the questions that consume her as curator of the Southern Historical Collection\, and questions that she hopes every individual would consider for themselves\, their families\, and their communities. \n\nChaitra Powell has held the inaugural Sarah Graham Kenan Curatorship in the Southern Historical Collection since 2021. Prior to this appointment\, Powell served as the African American Collections and Outreach Archivist\, and as the Project Director for UNC Libraries’ Mellon funded Community-Driven Archives grant. In each of these roles\, Powell works to expand the possibilities of the archives by engaging diverse communities\, donors\, researchers and stewardship models. Before coming to UNC Libraries\, Powell worked for government\, corporate\, and community archives in Phoenix\, Chicago\, and Los Angeles. She is a certified archivist and holds an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Arizona.\n\n\nEvent Activities are Free; Gallery Admission applies. \n$5 Suggested Donation for Lectures \n\nREGISTER FOR LECTURE \nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations\, at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Equitable Design in Architecture: Reflection of a Moment with Charles Boney and Danny Adams
DESCRIPTION:Free with Museum Admission \n  \nIn 2022\, LS3P completed the installation of the first USCT Park in the nation\, located on CAM’s grounds. The opening of the park marked the one-year anniversary of the unveiling of Boundless. We welcome Charles Boney and Danny Adams for a presentation to our community. \nCharles and Danny will engage in a discussion centered on the multifaceted dimensions of designing spaces dedicated to memory\, retrospection\, and education. This presentation delves into the dynamic realm of memorialization\, scrutinizing various approaches and historical periods. It culminates with an exploration of the USCT Memorial. These case studies span a spectrum of influence\, size\, material composition\, political significance\, and geographical context. Simultaneously embracing the past and the future\, the design of the USCT Memorial encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the space\, forging personal connections to the installation’s profound meaning. This approach elevates the emotional resonance of the experience. As we evolve in our perspectives on remembrance\, reflection\, and education\, we are reshaping how we invest in\, design\, and inhabit spatial relationships\, fostering inclusivity and diversity in engagement. \n  \nCharles Boney began his service to his architectural firm LS3P in 1978. Charles served as principal architect for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Governors’ Village\, an award-winning\, innovative approach to educational design which created for a “village” for over 4\,800 students. He was principal architect for Union County Schools’ Weddington High School\, which led to over $100M in further design work for this client. His work encompasses numerous comprehensive renovation projects\, including three schools designed by the firm in 1924 and the award-winning Thalian Hall historic theatre renovations. Higher education clients include numerous community colleges and UNC at Wilmington. \nA lifelong resident of Wilmington\, Chris learned the value of design at an early age\, through the eyes of his architect father\, Charlie Boney.  He has continued his family’s commitment to improving the built environment\, contributing to the community\, and to fostering issues of social equity. \n  \nFirmwide Design Leader Danny Adams joined LS3P in 2009\, and brings over 23 years of experience in both public and private projects throughout North Carolina and beyond. His design and project management experience includes local\, national\, and international projects in diverse practice areas. \nWhile practicing in Raleigh\, NC\, and Washington\, DC\, his project experience has ranged from residential and commercial adaptive reuse projects to major corporate mixed-use architectural projects to urban and civic master plans and redevelopment studies. \nOutside of LS3P\, Danny continues to be involved with community outreach programs through the Wilmington AIA and UNCW Coastal Engineering Advisory Board. He is a professional architectural and photojournalistic photographer. \n  \nREGISTER
