SUMMARY:Sunset Performance Series: Durty Dub's Tribute to Charley Pride
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Performance Series: Durty Dub’s Tribute to Charley Pride\nThursday\, March 19\, 7:00 PM\nAt PNC USCT Park\, on CAM grounds | FREE; $5 Suggested Donation \nJoin us outside at the PNC USCT Park for an evening of classic country reimagined. In this intimate duo performance\, Durty Dub and powerhouse vocalist Myk’l Hanna breathe new life into the music of Charley Pride\, one of country’s most prolific and groundbreaking artists. With heartfelt storytelling and rich harmonies\, they’ll take you through Pride’s hits with a blend of soul\, gospel\, and reggae influences that feel both reverent and fresh. \nDurty Dub renders Charley Pride’s classic country anthems faithfully while refreshing some pieces with reggae\, soul and gospel adaptations. Tonight\, he’ll offer an intimate duo performance with vocalist Myk’l Hanna\, adding some background and fun stories about the man himself. Roll Pride! \nAs the sun sets over the Boundless installation by Stephen Hayes\, settle in for live music that celebrates legacy and genre-defying creativity. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy the laid-back\, community vibe CAM’s Sunset Performance Series is known for. Free and open to all. \nMore About the Artists:\nDurty Dub first learned who Charley Pride was from his grandmother after one fateful thanksgiving dinner in 2016. An article in Jet magazine led her to recount Pride’s incredible legacy\, including 36 #1 hit singles\, over 70 million albums sold\, 31 gold and 4 platinum albums – including one quadruple platinum. Also\, on RCA Records he is second in sales on RCA only to Elvis Presley. \nFascinated by the storied success of one of country music’s few (at the time) black artists\, Dub set out to digest Pride’s extensive catalog and learn more about the man. The next step was to put a tribute band together\, consisting of NC’s most versatile musicians\, including vocalist Michael Hanna\, percussionist Atiba Rorie [Africa Unplugged]\, bassist Kenny Phelps-McKeown [Ellis Dyson & The Shambles] & drummer Devin Fuller [Emily Musolino]. The band has also been joined on occasion by slide-guitar slinger\, Phil Cook [Bruce Hornsby\, Hiss Golden Messenger]. \nWith this personnel\, Dub soon found that he was able to render Pride’s classic country anthems faithfully while refreshing some of the pieces with reggae\, soul and gospel adaptations. Since then\, the project has gone on to share the stage with H.C. McEntire\, Gangstagrass\, and play the mainstage at the 2019 Beaufort Music Festival. \nSponsored in part by \n \nLearn more about Boundless and the PNC USCT Park here.

SUMMARY:Music in the Galleries: The Galan Trio

Loew’s Game Changers is a two-movement work composed in direct conversation with the exhibition. Developed over months of composing in the galleries\, Game Changers is a musical interpretation of the visual language and artistic techniques of two paintings that hang side by side: Tiger’s Eye by Helen Frankenthaler and Cityscape #3 by Richard Diebenkorn. Join us in the galleries for this one of a kind musical experience. \n\n\nREGISTER\n\nMake a night of it by reserving a table or grabbing a drink at CAM Café before the show. Café opens for dinner at 5pm. Focused primarily on presenting new compositions\, the trio creates original programs\, the most recent being Kinesis. For this project\, Galan Trio commissioned five distinguished composers from the United States to write works on the theme Kinesis leading to their first tour in October 2021. The title “Kinesis” draws inspiration from both science and language. In biological terms\, kinesis refers to an undirected movement in response to external stimuli. In Greek\, it simply means movement or motion. For Galan Trio\, motion embodies the essence of life—signifying continuity\, transformation\, and hope. Since 2021\, the ensemble has presented Kinesis at more than 30 U.S. universities\, with additional performances scheduled through fall 2025.

Having grown up immersed in the sounds of everything from Dr. John to Tommy Jarrell\, his musical sensibility has an incredibly intuitive flow\, and his touch on the piano has always been beautifully unique. With that much natural talent\, he wouldn’t necessarily have had to push himself to the limits he has\, and it’s been a wonder to witness his evolution into one of the greatest working organ and keyboard players today. His sincerity cuts straight through every note he plays\, with a heartfelt smile and mischief-tinged eyes\, and his presence in any room feels like a big hug.” – Ric Robertson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nIn 2017\, Fribush graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. During that time he worked with influential mentors like Ran Blake\, Jason Moran\, Jamie Saft\, Dennis Montgomery III\, Cecil McBee\, John Medeski and more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFribush has recently produced and recorded music with Charlie Hunter\, Lucius\, Dori Freeman\, Ric Robertson\, MC Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger)\, Joel Savoy\, Viv and Riley\, Taylor Meier (Caamp)\, California Honey Drops and more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021 Fribush joined Hiss Golden Messenger\, a band from Durham\, NC.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFribush released his sophomore record ‘People Please’ in March of 2024.\n\n\nPNC USCT PARK\nThe PNC USCT Park is the only sculpture park in the nation created to honor the United States Colored Troops and their fight for freedom. The park is located on museum grounds\, which was the site of the Battle of Forks Road. Located in the park is Boundless\, a life-size public  sculpture by NC artist Stephen Hayes depicting the figures of 11 African American men\, casted in bronze\, who are connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants\, re-enactors\, veterans\, and community leaders. \nLearn more about Boundless and the PNC USCT Park here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored in part by

SUMMARY:The Spirit of Jazz in NC: John Brown and Romare Bearden
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate art and music with the Spirit of Jazz in NC\, an event that includes a film screening\, performance\, conversation\, and museum tour. \nNorth Carolina has long been home to legends in both art and music. The Spirit of Jazz honors two of them—Romare Bearden of Charlotte\, NC\, whose work is featured in Close to Home\, and a living legend of jazz\, John Brown\, the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University. \nThe afternoon begins with a screening of One Night in Kernersville\, a short documentary by Rodrigo Dorfman following jazz bassist John Brown’s journey as he makes a big band recording in Kernersville\, NC. A successful bassist\, composer\, educator\, and actor\, John has a long history of performance excellence. At the age of 13\, he began performing with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. He was playing Principal Bass with that orchestra and performing with the Florence Symphony in South Carolina while still in high school. \nAfter a Q&A session about the film with Adrienne Nirdé\, the Director of the NC African American Heritage Commission\, John takes to the stage with a trio of friends to weave the story of jazz across North Carolina’s music trails. Romare Bearden’s paintings and prints paint a backdrop to the performance. Bearden’s passion for jazz began at an early age\, and he kept his art studio at the Apollo Theater building\, where the hum of jazz could always be heard.  \nStay after the performance to see Bearden’s works in person on a tour of Close to Home on the exhibition’s final weekend. \n\nTICKETS\nTickets are $20 per Adult CAM Members; $25 per Adult Not-Yet-Members\, $10 for Students. \n  \n\nFor questions or concerns regarding accessibility\, please contact Georgia Mastroieni\, Deputy Director of Operations at (910) 726-9492 or georgia@cameronartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Tift Merritt and Thomas Sayre: Four Walls\, Four Songs (Reprise)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 15th\, 2025 for this special performance by grammy-nominated musician Tift Merritt and NC Artist Thomas Sayre.\n\nFour Walls\, Four Songs\, a sound response to Thomas Sayre’s Four Walls\, returns to Cameron Art Museum for a reprise. The performance explores the burned\, brushed\, rusted\, and razed layers of Sayre’s visual work.
