This month’s session will take place outside in the courtyard\, and will include art activities for all ages\, parents included\, facilitated by museum staff. \n\n  \n\nTry your hand at spoken word poetry with guest artist LeJuane (El’Ja) Bowens. We’ll be joined by guest artist Jameka Purdie. This drop-in program is designed for all ages—kids\, teens\, and adults—to make art together. \n\n\n\nYounger visitors can create birthday cards for Minnie to display in Minnie’s Gatehouse on CAM’s grounds and make artwork inspired by her use of symmetry. \nA family-friendly tour of the exhibitions will be held at 11:30 AM\, inviting all ages to discover connections between Minnie’s work and CAM’s galleries. After moving to Wilmington at a young age\, she spent most of her life here and began making art in 1935 after hearing a powerful voice telling her to “draw or die.” Her work features repeating faces\, eyes\, angels\, fantastical creatures\, and flowers that reflect her deep spiritual vision and fascination with the natural world. “My dreams are in brilliant colors\, and I paint the way I remember the dreams.” \nAbout Guest Artist Jameka PurdieWilmington native Jameka Wrisbon Purdie began creating custom\, one-of-a-kind jewelry under the name Alter Ego Designs in 2009. Her pieces range from classic to eclectic and are assembled with quality components sourced from around the world. Working with techniques such as stringing\, wire wrapping\, weaving\, and metal-making\, Jameka is an eternal student\, always exploring new methods and materials in her creative practice.

DESCRIPTION:Kids at CAM: New Year’s Calligraphy (Kakizome/書初め) with Kana Sahashi\nSaturday\, January 17\, 2026 | 10 AM-12 PM \n  \nJoin us for Kids@CAM and experience Japanese calligraphy through Shodo (書道)\, the traditional art of writing with brush and ink\, with Kana Sahashi.  \nYou’ll also explore Kakizome (書初め)\, the first calligraphy of the year in Japan. Traditionally\, people in Japan write lucky words\, personal goals\, or special phrases for the New Year to welcome a fresh start and wish for a wonderful year ahead.  \nIn this event\, we will practice basic brush techniques and strokes before writing the Japanese characters. Japanese calligraphy not only helps improve handwriting but also supports good posture\, boosts focus\, and provides a relaxing\, meditative experience. \nKids@CAM is an event for everyone\, parents included! Click here to learn more about Living History Day at CAM.\n\nChildren will create their own drum inspired by the drummer boy in the Boundless sculpture and make 3D silhouette artwork representing the soldiers featured in the monument. A family-friendly tour of Boundless\, located outdoors in PNC USCT Park\, will take place at 11:30 am.\n\n\n\nBoundless\, the public sculpture by NC artist Stephen Hayes\, honors the USCT and their fight for freedom.
