DESCRIPTION:America250 at CAM: A Veteran’s Day Celebration\nCAM Community Day | Saturday\, November 8\, 10 AM-5 PM\nFREE admission all day! \nCameron Art Museum joins the nationwide America 250 commemoration with a full day of storytelling\, music\, family activities\, performances\, and living history demonstrations. This Community Day highlights the bravery and service of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and honors the enduring contributions of Black veterans in the ongoing fight for freedom.\n \n\nAll ages are welcome and encouraged to take part in this day of recognition\, learning\, and celebration. \n\n\nAgenda\nOngoing (10 AM–5 PM) \n\nUSCT Reenactors – Experience living history through demonstrations\, drills\, songs\, and storytelling. Visit reenactor camps to learn about Civil War history and the service of the USCT.\n\n10 AM \n\nOpening Welcome at Boundless – With Dr. Sonny Kelly\, USCT reenactors\, and storyteller Donna Washington. Through poetry and song\, we gather at the Boundless sculpture to begin this day of recognition.\n\n10 AM-12 PM \n\nFREE Kids at CAM session will be held in the courtyard for kids & families. We know that folktales are told for many reasons.  They can inspire\, delight\, and even scare us. They aren’t created in a vacuum. These stories reflect the strength\, fear\, and hope of generations. Families are invited to “Through Their Own Eyes”\, a celebration of the stories that sustained\, inspired\, and helped African Americans overcome their darkest moments to reach for the light and hope of the future.\n\n12:15–1 PM \n\nWorkshop – History Through Human Eyes: Who Gets to Tell the Story? – Family-friendly storytelling workshop with Donna Washington. Why do we remember some stories from history and forget others? Who were the people who fought these battles? What did they want? In this workshop\, we try to go beyond the slogans and the selected story that makes it into the history books. What would it be like through the eyes of the men and women who stood their ground and fought for what they thought was right?\nRegister Here – spots limited\n\n2–3:30 PM \n\nThe Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans – Dr. Sonny Kelly presents a theatrical presentation on the centuries of service by Black soldiers. “The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans” is a one-man presentation & performance elevating Black freedom fighters and veterans with North Carolina connections – known & unknown\, on and off the traditional battlefield – who have engaged in over 400 years of a struggle for freedom\, liberty\, and equality. Their sacrifices\, resistance\, and resilience have contributed to American democracy\, even as they were denied the full rights of citizens. DESCRIPTION:Join us for CAM Community Day! Explore how the arts can support resiliency in children\, families\, and our broader community through interactive experiences for all ages. All programs and exhibitions are FREE from 10:00am to 5pm. \nIn collaboration with the New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force and other local organizations\, the museum will offer a wide variety of art projects\, performances\, and interactive collaborations designed to inspire and strengthen individuals and families. Visit community tables to learn about valuable local resources and discover the many ways organizations are working to support well-being in our region. \nCameron Art Museum partners with organizations across an eight-county region to provide inclusive programming for all. Activities are designed for all ages and abilities—everyone is welcome! \nActivities Include: \n\n10-11 am – Super Jane Smith. Author and illustrator Jane Smith will read “Teddy’s Bear Takes a Tumble” and lead an activity. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author.\n\n\n11-11:30 – Turning the Wheel: A Turning the Wheel Creative Play Pop-Up is a time for the community to come together in play. We gather in a circle and explore spontaneous movement through non-elimination games played by the whole group\, in small groups\, and with partners. People of all ages and abilities can follow the easy cues given by the TTW facilitators\, encouraging everyone to engage and have fun with live music accompaniment. Our goal is to enjoy ourselves\, communicate through our movements\, and create joy together. \n\n\n10 am – 5 pm – Novant Health: Join us at a Resource table featuring a coloring activity for children. SUMMARY:USCT Descendants Homecoming Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Descendants Homecoming Day also serves as the second anniversary of the installation of Boundless by Stephen Hayes. The contemporary monument pulls from its current story tellers as much as it does from its historical narratives. Long before the statue was erected on our grounds\, the descendants of the USCT soldiers who fought during the Wilmington Campaign held and told these stories in their respective communities. This November 11th we will honor the men of the USCT through their continued family legacies. Join us for a day of fellowship through storytelling\, music\, reenactment and more. \nSaturday\, November 11\nFREE Community Day \n10 AM-5 PM Living History and USCT Reenactors on the Grounds \n10-11:30 AM Family Activities \n11-11:30 AM USCT Reenactor Clark Morgan of the Ohio 5th Speaks at Boundless \nClark Morgan aka Sgt Maj Milton Murray is a Civil War historian and presenter for the past 20 years focusing on the 5th USCT. He and other members (of the reorganized 5th) travel the country telling the untold stories of these great men of valor.
