SUMMARY:Book Discussion in The Work of Their Hands
DESCRIPTION:Book Discussion in The Work of Their Hands Exhibition\nJoin us for a book discussion in The Work of Their Hands exhibition. We’ll be exploring All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles. Together\, we will delve into a powerful story of three generations of women\, connected by an embroidered sack. Allow yourself to be inspired by their unwavering resolve to preserve family bonds despite enslavement\, separation\, and uncertain freedom. \nKimi Faxon Hemingway\, a Lecturer of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will lead the discussion. She was named 2024 UNCW Lecturer of the Year. Her insights will help us delve into the themes of resilience and memory in the book. Together\, we’ll be gaining a deeper understanding of the legacy of enslaved women whose labor and artistry are honored in our exhibition. \nAs Tiya Miles writes\, “Our foremothers wove spiritual beliefs\, cultural values\, and historical knowledge into their flax\, woolen\, silk\, and cotton webs. The work of their hands can lead us back to their histories and serve as guide rails as we grope through the difficult past.” This powerful quote guides our conversation as we explore the historical and emotional depths of the narrative. \nPre-registration requested; $5 donations appreciated. \nREGISTER HERE\nLearn more about The Work of Their Hands exhibit here.

SUMMARY:Solito with Dr. Miguel Rojas Sotelo
DESCRIPTION:Free; Registration Required \nDonations Appreciated \n  \nPlace of Encounters/Lugar de Encuentros explores migration experiences through the art of six different Latin American artists. Join us for a discussion of Solito\, written by Javier Zamora. This memoir tells the story of his 3\,000-mile journey to the U.S which he undertook at the age of nine. \nDr. Sotelo states\, “This travel book is a rare\, eye-opening rendition of the brutal reality of border crossing – by walking all the way from there to here. At the same time\, it is an affirmation of solidarity\, as any traveler needs companions.” \nMiguel Rojas-Sotelo works at the intersection of critical human geography\, ethnic studies\, visual anthropology\, environmental and health humanities and cultural theory. As scholar\, filmmaker\, visual artist\, and media activist he studies how communities of color (indigenous and migrants) and natural spaces are shaped by modernity and how they mobilize to adapt and resist. He is particularly interested in how such people(s) articulate their archival knowledge\, racial and class politics\, the spatiality of those processes\, and how they are manifest in the landscape via visual\, audiovisual\, oral\, and textual narratives. \n  \nREGISTER
