This special program begins with an intimate gallery conversation honoring Hiroshi’s remarkable career\, followed by a deeper exploration of Japanese culture in our spacious reception hall. \nHiroshi’s wife\, Jane Tierney\, joined by ceramic artist Gayle Tustin\, will reflect on his artistic journey and evolution as a potter. Their discussion will illuminate Hiroshi’s life in Wilmington as both an artist and a teacher\, and the way his work seamlessly blended Eastern and Western influences. From traditional ceramic techniques to bold innovation\, from complex design to deep spirituality\, Hiroshi’s practice offers a powerful example of cultural dialogue expressed through form and material. \nThe evening continues with a screening of Matter of Reverence\, a short documentary that provides rare insight into the artist’s philosophy and process. Following the film\, guests are invited to the reception hall for an engaging conversation on Japanese culture. We are honored to welcome Dr. Ryan Lidster\, Assistant Professor of Japanese at UNCW\, and Kana Sahashi\, Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) Coordinator at UNCW\, who will offer cultural context and perspectives that enrich our understanding of Hiroshi’s work. \nEnjoy music in the exhibition from 6-6:30 PM by the Lark Quartet\, a blended ensemble with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra. \nWhat to expect: \n\nIntimate gallery conversation honoring Hiroshi Sueyoshi\nScreening of Matter of Reverence\nCultural conversation with Dr. Ryan Lidster and Kana Sahashi\nLive music 6–6:30 PM by the Lark Quartet\nFree with admission; registration required\n\nREGISTRATION*\n*Due to high demand\, tickets are sold out.
