CAM collection continues to expand with trendsetting artists who are shaping NC’s creative economy and giving voice to the spectrum of American experiences. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Clarence Heyward now creates paintings and collages in his Raleigh studio. Heyward’s work explores notions of the Black American experience, primarily focusing on how the use of media and historical documentation is used to shape perceptions of Black American culture. His work investigates cultural truths, challenges stereotypes, and examines identity. Using the chromakey green color to reference the video concept of a green screen, Clarence creates a sense of possibility within identity as we recognize who we see on the canvas is a function of who we are as observers.
