Artist Talk in “The Work of Their Hands”: Hattie Schmidt

While born in Georgetown SC, Schmidt has been a Wilmington resident since the age of four. Creating works that display her life’s journey, Hattie’s quilts on view in The Work of Their Hands feature both aspects of her life: pieced quilts that explore her Gullah heritage as well as photo essays of her family on cloth, featuring images of the NC the Community Hospital.

Since childhood, Schmidt has been motivated to be creative and pushed beyond her area of comfort. Much of her art has taken her deeper into an exploration of her cultural heritage. Her love of sewing and quilting stems from early days observing her grandmother’s remarkable sewing skills. Hattie’s quilts are comprised of traditional quilting patterns alongside other techniques including batik, sweetgrass weaving, painting and hand embroidery.
