Asian Paper Manipulation–Momigami & Joomchi
Asian mulberry papers have special properties that western papers do not. It is these properties that allow us to manipulate them into very strong pieces to be used in art & craft projects. Momigami is the process of crushing kozo papers while also adding a natural strengthening agent. Hanji papers will be ‘felted’ into Joomchi, a cloth- or leather-like product. Both processes allow you to create beautifully delicate looking pieces that are remarkably strong--2-D & 3-D is possible. Not paper making.
