Daily Sketching

Students explore ways to create sketches from direct observation while discovering how daily sketching really helps to improve skills. Study strengthens fundamental use of positive and negative space relations, perspective in basic terms, and the power of a picture plane. Creating multiple sketches helps gain insight into representing real life - in the studio, on museum grounds and within gallery exhibitions.

Archimboldo anyone? Do you like to think way outside of the box? Does an ordinary portrait have you creating extensions of fantasy beyond the real features? Yes, this class is for you! Explore the art of Leonardo da Vinci's "grotesque" heads that influenced Archimboldo's nature and fantasy portraits. Students work from direct observation, creating fantasy from reality. CAM exhibitions and grounds provide starting points for portraits of fantasy.

Eat Your Still Life! Food in Art

Explore Wayne Thiebaud's art of food. Students explore Thiebaud's colorful food paintings, and unique distinct shadows that have made Thiebaud part of the pop art movement. Students explore the qualities of a high key painting, and how to create their own Wayne Thiebaud style food painting. Don't forget Thiebaud was famous for his love of cakes and pastries!

Mixed Media Illustration & Collage

From mud to ceramics - this camp focuses on the basics of hand-building, pinching, coiling and rolling out slabs to create a variety of decorative and functional pieces. Projects may include relief tiles, wind chimes, ocarinas, ugly jugs, games and more.

Drawing: The Likeness of People

Using live models and photographs, students learn how to capture a likeness in portraiture. Special attention is given to the basics of looking for shapes and shadows and keeping results alive, not stiff!
