Jazz @ The CAM: Jua

Thursday, 4/6/2017
6:30PM-8:00PM
The Jazz @ The CAM concert series is pleased to welcome back the season five series (2014-15) opener, Jua (http://www.juasmusic.com) performing with a trio comprised of Andrew Berinson (piano), Donovan Cheatham (drums) and Lance Scott (bass) to close out season seven. Jua is a unique and emotive jazz vocal stylist whose range brings to mind Jon Lucien and Will Downing, among others.

Nearly ten years ago, Jua Howard (who uses only his first name professionally, Swahili for “sun”) was making quite a name for himself in neo-soul circles, crooning in velvety tenor tones reminiscent of Luther Vandross and Donny Hathaway in clubs from New York City to London. While living in the Washington D.C. area Jua was a background vocalist with the legendary Blackbyrds, “Jazz was clearly a big part of their foundation,” he says of the Blackbyrds. “Singing with them made me think seriously about pursuing a career in jazz.”

In June 2014, Jua showcased his change in musical focus with the release of his sophomore cd "Colors of Life". He currently resides in Raleigh, NC where he continues songwriting, performing and working on his next project. Purchase seats on CAM’s website, by phone and at CAM’s Visitor Services desk. Weyerhaeuser Reception Hall.

The Jazz @ The CAM concert series is presented by the Cameron Art Museum and the Cape Fear Jazz Society (www.capefearjazzsociety.org). Come hear musicians from Wilmington and around the state performing a range of jazz genres for your listening pleasure. CAM Café is open and serving before and after the concerts, reservations suggested: 910.777.2363.
